A good cutting board is durable and made of a hardwood such as walnut or oak. Exotic hardwoods can be attractive, but very expensive. Check for wood availability and price at your local hardware store. Be aware that wood prices can be seasonal. You may be able to find scrap or discarded hard wood at a bargain. Check the discard bins or ask at the store. You won¡¯t need much wood, so it¡¯s worth inquiring to avoid buying more than you need. Boards are usually sold by the foot or yard, in various widths and thicknesses. Make sure you purchase wood that¡¯s a little wider and longer than you think you need, in case of mistakes..
Even before you go to the hardware store, make a pattern for your cutting board. Use your imagination and make a fun and simple shape: an animal, your favorite car, a football. If you¡¯re taking this cutting board on fishing trips, consider making it the shape of a fish. Once you¡¯ve decided on a shape, draw it on a piece of paper or cardboard. This will be your pattern. Take it with you when purchasing wood to help you choose the right piece.
You can either make the cutting board one solid piece (which then limits your choices of wood based on size) or you can glue and clamp several pieces of wood together.
If using one solid piece, simply place your pattern on the wood, then trace its outline with a pencil. There are several ways to cut the wood, but using a bandsaw is the easiest if you¡¯re cutting anything but a straight line. Routers will also cut shapes well, too. If your cutting board is a simple square or rectangle shape, a circular or table saw will work fine. Whatever cutting tool you use, be sure to wear protective gear for your eyes and ears. A dust mask is also important.
If using several pieces of wood, cut them a little longer than the desired length. Dry fit them together, side by side then use waterproof glue between each piece. Clamp them together and allow them to dry as per the glue¡¯s instructions. Once dried, use a damp cloth or sponge to clean off the excess glue. Sandpaper may be necessary. Follow the above directions for cutting the board to the desired shape. Then, to ensure evenness across the top of your board, sand it. Begin with a rougher grit, working down to a fine grit, but always sanding in the direction of the grain so as not to scratch it.
Regardless of how you cut the shape, a router with a round-over bit can be used to round the edges. A router can also be used to create decorative grooves or for a juice channel. If you plan on hanging the cutting board, cut a simple hole using a drill or drill press.
Finally, you¡¯ll need a finish for your new cutting board. Because it will be in contact with food, it¡¯s important to use something non-toxic like ¡°salad bowl¡± finish. Mineral oil will also work quite well. Again, check at your local hardware store for non-toxic finishes.
