Dogs often need a kennel outside. Some need a space to go during the day when their owners are at work or off running errands. Others are happier living outdoors. Whatever reasons your dog needs a kennel, building one yourself does not have to be difficult. Following a few basic guidelines will help you make your friend a favorite outdoor hangout.

Main factors needing deliberation before you build include size, location, and materials to use in constructing the walls and flooring. 

Overall size of the kennel will often be dependant on how large the pet is, and how many pets will be in it at any given time. If you own one or two small breed dogs and just need to create a secure outdoor space for them to run about and maybe spend a few hours when you go to work or grocery shopping, an area approximately four feet wide by six feet long will be more than adequate. Increase size depending on size of animal and length of time they will be spending in it. Keep in mind that if a dog will be spending large amounts of time inside the kennel, it needs to be large enough for the animal to exercise properly.

Size of the attached house is as important as the kennel itself. A doghouse should be proportionate in size to the dog that will use it. 

Dogs should be able to easily enter and exit the house, but house should not be overly large, especially if it is in a colder climate. A too large house will not keep the dog as warm as a smaller one. A smaller house will be able to retain the dog's natural body heat much easier than an overly large one. 

Avoid a plastic doghouse. They do not retain heat very well which can be a problem in colder temperatures, and often become overheated on extremely hot days. Wood has proven itself through the years to be the best material choice overall for doghouses. 

Bedding should consist of cedar or other material that will not attract fleas. Avoid the use of blankets, old clothes, carpet, or other materials that will retain moisture. Houses should be raised slightly off the ground by a few inches for added protection from rain, waste, and ground bugs. 

Location of your kennel is an important decision. Dogs should be in a secure area, away from anything harmful. If your dog is a digger, make sure not to place the kennel over any area where power, phone, or gas lines are buried. If possible, place in a naturally shaded area. 

After deciding if it will be a permanent or moveable structure, decide what materials will be used in its construction. Options for a permanent structure could include posts permanently affixed in cement, with a complete wire or pre-made panel surround. The side of an existing shed or garage could be utilized for one wall of a permanent kennel. 

Moveable kennels could consist of smaller pre-made panels that snap together and are relatively easy to move. 

Flooring options should be considered early in the planning stages. If your dog is a digger, it is advisable to pour cement if the kennel is going to be permanently located. Consider pouring on a mild sloping grade away from attached housing. Waste will be easier to hose away without worries of it washing back. Moveable perforated panel floor sections, available at feed mills or large pet or farm supply stores, are easy to clean and sanitize. They also help deter small diggers, though I have heard of larger dogs pulling them up to make an escape! Rounded rock will work as a natural drainage for waste buildup prevention, and is not hard on dog¡¯s feet as long as it is not overly large. 

However or wherever you build your kennel, make sure to provide adequate food and water, keep the kennel clean, and provide clean, warm bedding during cold temperatures and plenty of shade during the hot summer months.
