Youth basketball provides a wonderful opportunity for children to be introduced to sports, the concept of a team, and a little friendly competition. Friendly and fun are two key concepts when it comes to youth league activities. For some, this is the first time they have ever held or played with a basketball. Here are some defense drills that can be adapted for any age or ability group.
Defensive slides 每 The very foundation of a defensive drill. Have your players get into a good defensive stance. Feet should be shoulder width apart, knees slightly bent, and hands up or out to the side. On your whistle your team members will slide left, right, back peddle, and run forward. To make it more realistic you may want to be dribbling a ball in the direction you want your players to move. You can also add a fake shot and have your players jump to block it. Start out moving slowly. As your players become more familiar with the drill you can move closer to game speed.
60 second hold-off 每 This is not the official name for this drill but it describes it pretty well. Group your players into pairs. Work with one group at a time in the beginning. After everyone gets the hang of the drill you can work with as many groups as you want. One player is on offense and the other is on defense. Have the defensive player facing his teammate like he is guarding them. Place the basketball on the foul line. On your whistle, the player on defense boxes out the player on offense. The defensive player is trying to keep the offensive player boxed out for the full sixty seconds. This is actually a pretty tough drill so for young children you probably want to start with less time and work your way up to a full sixty seconds.
Shell drill 每 Divide your team into groups of four or five. Have the first group line up around the three point line an equal distance apart. Then have group two line up across from someone in a good defensive stance (inside the three point line). Start the ball at the top of the key. Position your defensive players where they would be according to the ball. (ex. one pass away, two passes away, ball coverage). As the offense passes the ball around the horn the defense moves into the appropriate positions. If you choose, the person guarding the ball can call out, ※ball, ball, ball.§
Tips for this drill:
1. If your man is one pass away play deny defense with one hand in the passing lane.
2. If your man is two passes away play in the key in help position.
3. If you man is more than two passes away play on the outside line of the key in help position.
4. Hold the ball for a two second count before passing to the next person.
5. Offense 每 after catching the ball turn in triple-threat position and face the basket.
Close out drill 每 This is another boxing out drill. Divide your team in half. Line them up around the three point line in pairs, one on offense and the other on defense. You can use the basic shell drill formation as a guide. You, the coach, stand under the basket. Have your players pass the ball around. After a few passes they pass the ball into you. At this point, all of the defensive players have to rush in and touch you somewhere on the arm. After all of the defensive players are in the lane you pass the ball back out. The player with the ball shoots. The offensive players go for the rebound while the defense boxes them out.
In all drills it is important to remember a few basic things. Always have your players practice aggressively. They will play defense in a game the same way they play in practice. Your players should never be standing straight up. They should always be in a good defensive position, flexing at the waist and knees. Even if they feel silly, your players should be calling the ball and moving their hands up, down, or to the side following the balls every movement.
