A judge of a good roller coaster is a personal matter of taste but a long ride, with many turns and drops combined with speed, especially speed, will probably fit the bill for all thrill seekers.  Though some prefer a classic wooden coaster, with or without loops, while others will only ride the new high-tech, launched coasters, there are plenty throughout the world to keep the chills and excitement at an extreme level for every coaster enthusiast.

If the need for speed is your passion, try these top coasters.  You may have to travel to enjoy the thrill but isn¡¯t it worth it?

The newly opened Kingda Ka, at Six Flags Great Adventure Park in New Jersey, has topped the list for the world¡¯s fastest roller coaster.  Though the ride is over in 50.6 seconds after a hydraulic launch, you¡¯ll reach 128 mph in a mere 3.5 seconds.  Climbing to 456 feet with 90-degree ascent and descents, a vertical spiral and a second hill that is designed to provide free-floating airtime, you¡¯ll have many chances to enjoy yourself or completely freak out.  The Kingda Ka was manufactured by Intamin, a Swiss corporation, and includes four trains with over-the-shoulder safety restraints.  Anticipate a long waiting queue as this ride is popular.

The Kingda Ka at Six Flags pushed the Top Thrill Dragster from the fastest roller coaster but only by eight miles per hour.  The Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point Park in Ohio maintains a top speed of 120 mph.  With trains designed to resemble top fuel dragsters that move to a starting line and then launch to its top speed, you¡¯ll feel you are at the racetrack.  Climbing forty-two stories and rotating before falling back to earth and twisting around to the station, you won¡¯t have time to scream.

While you are in the Cedar Point Park, try the Millennium Force roller coaster.  Once the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the world, it¡¯s been grandstanded, but still is a breathtaking 310 feet and 93-mph journey this coaster winds its way through the center of the park, crosses a lagoon and dives onto an island.  It was the first coaster in the world to use an elevator lift system to take riders up to the crest before falling at an eighty-degree angle back to Earth.  Complete thrills that will have you lining up again right after you¡¯re done.

For an out of this world experience try Superman:  The Ultimate Escape at either Six Flags in Mexico or Six Flags ¡°Magic Mountain¡± in Lo Angeles, California.  Riders live the legend of Superman as they are chased by enemy forces through a tunnel to achieve 100 mph in seven seconds.  The chase has you climbing up a forty-story skyscraper to suddenly stop and experience weightlessness, then plummeting backwards returning to the crystalline ice cavern.  Both Mexico and California have you chasing the enemy but you may have to experience the ride a few times before realizing if success is at hand.

Should international travels take you to Japan, don¡¯t miss the Dodonpa at Fuji-Q Highlands.  This steel roller coaster with an air-powered launch will reach 107 mph in a few seconds.  The twists and 171-foot crest won¡¯t do wonders for you lunch but should keep your roller coaster thrill needs in tact.  In addition, try the Steel Dragon at the Nagashima Spaland.  A long track, two tunnels and speeds reaching 95 mph should keep the thrills coming.  For those that must have it all ¨C wait for the front seat of the first car ¨C it¡¯s worth the park admission.

With technology and safety considerations all continually advancing, these roller coasters won¡¯t stay the fastest in the world for long.  So regress to your youthful years, throw your cares to the wind and try at least one of these rides for a thrill of a lifetime.
