Blackjack is a game based on both luck and skill.  The order of the cards is set before the first hand is dealt.  However, a savvy blackjack player can use the dealer's up card and his own hand to make a percentage bet.  Over time a player can expect to win 44% of the time, so the trick is to quit once you're ahead.  Continuing to play after a winning streak only contributes to the House's 56% advantage.

The most essential learning tool a blackjack player can own is called the Basic Strategy chart.  Available at most casinos and gambling reference sections in bookstores, this Basic Strategy allows the player to make informed decisions while betting.  The player's original hand is located on the chart, then the intersection with the dealer's up card is pinpointed.  Inside that square will be a letter which stands for the betting action to take.

An 'S' stands for 'stand'.  This means the player should not take additional cards to improve his total.  In general, players stand on totals of 17 or over as a rule.  Totals between 12 and 16 are very tricky to evaluate.  The chart usually recommends standing if the dealer's up card is low value, but to take a 'hit' if the dealer holds a 7 or higher.  The player should always assume the dealer's hole card is a ten.

'H' stands for 'hit'.  Since the object of the game is to reach 21 points (or as close to 21 as possible), players are usually encourage to take additional cards if their original total is below 10.  Taking a hit on anything under 11 is always a safe play, since the highest card value is 10 or a flexible 11.  Sometimes a series of low cards will keep the player's total under 21 even after 5 cards.  Players need to be cautious once the total reaches 12 or higher, especially if the dealer's up card is 7 or higher.

Occasionally a player will see a 'D' in the Basic Strategy chart.  This stands for 'double down' and is a special bet.  If a player has 9,10, or 11, any card will help them.  A player can place an identical bet next to his original bet in the ring and the dealer will only deal one more card.  This is a risky maneuver for the player, but the payoff is instantly doubled after a win.

The last possible option is a 'split'.  Conventional blackjack wisdom reserves splitting for pairs, especially aces or eights.  In a split situation, the player uses each card as the up card for two new hands. A second bet is placed outside the ring and the dealer deals one new card to each original card.  The player can still double down, hit or stand on both new hands.  Both hands may beat the dealer, hit a natural 21 (blackjack) or lose independently.  Splitting a natural 20 is an iffy situation, so the player has to weigh the payoff verses the possibility of a disastrous hand (12-16).

Basic blackjack strategy will usually allow a player to lose money very slowly.  Eventually the odds are stacked in favor of the House, so professional blackjack players only use the Basic Strategy as a quick reference.  Sometimes a player must go against the recommended strategy in order to improve his chances against a strong dealer up card.  Taking a hit on 16 may sound counterintuitive, but the dealer is most likely to win anyway.  Since the bet is probably lost, a player really has nothing to lose and everything to gain if the card is 5 or lower.

Winning at blackjack depends on extrapolating what the dealer is required to do during his own turn.  Knowing that a dealer MUST take a hit for hard totals under 17, a skilled player will stand on a weak hand and anticipate a dealer's bust (total over 21).  Doubling down and splitting pairs are risky bets, but good blackjack players look forward to 11s and pairs of aces or eights.  It helps the player to play each combination consistently.  Always split pairs, for example.  Double down on 10 or 11 every time.  Even if the Basic Strategy chart recommends standing on a weak hand, take a chance and hit on 12-16 once in a while.  Use the table minimal limit as one betting unit.  If you feel lucky, bet two or three units.  If you feel unlucky, bet one unit and hope for a chance to double down or split.  Varying your bets will often help you get ahead faster than the average player.  Once you're ahead, take the additional chips and store them out of sight.  Continue to bet with your original pot and routinely skim off the profits after a few good hands.

Winning at blackjack requires patience as the cards run hot or cold, and diligence while skimming off your profits.
