Insect and bug crafts can be made from just about anything, so just gather together whatever arts and crafts material you might have as well as any other odds and ends that might be lying around. To help get you started, a few good items to have would be glue, tape, string, ribbon, construction paper, scissors, clothespins, cotton balls, pompoms, paint, pipe cleaner, plastic eyes, markers and Popsicle sticks. This is a craft that allows for creative freedom so feel free to substitute craft materials as needed.

If you are limited on the amount or type of crafts material that you have here is a simple way to make some fun bugs. On a piece of plan or construction paper draw as many bugs and insects as you want. A few good bugs to choose from would be lady bugs, roly-poly bugs, grasshoppers, butterflies and worms. Once you have finished drawing all of the bugs color them in with crayons, colored pencils, markers, craft paint or puffy paint. Then add small wings, eyes and antennas to the bugs and cut them out. Use a bent paper clip to prop your bugs up and use them as game pieces or when playing make-believe. 

To make flying insects or bugs such as butterflies and dragonflies you will need a sturdy craft item to act as the body of the insect such as a clothespin, pencil, pipe cleaner, or a Popsicle stick. An unsharpened pencil is a great butterfly body and can be given away as a gift once the bug has been completed. If using a clothespin try to use the old fashioned kind that are made of solid wood and have a rounded top. If pipe cleaner is the body choice then bend the pipe cleaner in half and twine the two sides together leaving about one half of an inch untwined at the end to act as the antenna. To make the antenna for a clothespin or pencil body stick two bobby pins into the top of the body, an adult will be needed to handle the bobby pins.  Two small pieces of pipe cleaner can be glued to the top of the Popsicle stick body as antenna. 

To make the wings of the insect you can use two pieces of ribbon tied into bows, two layers of mesh netting synched in the middle, two Q-tips dipped into paint and glued together in the middle, or you can draw the wings on construction paper and cut them out. Attach the wings to the bugs or insects body with glue or you could tie or sew them on with a piece of string. Depending on how heavy the wings turn out you might need to use super glue or a hot glue gun to keep them properly fastened. To complete the flying insect or bug glue two small plastic eyes to its head or draw a small smiley face onto the head instead.

To make a bumble bee you will want to string together, with a sewing needle and thread, three pompoms or three colored cotton balls to make the body of the bumble bee.  Glue or paint two small eyes onto the head of your bumble bee, and stick two small pieces of pipe cleaner into the head above the eyes for antenna. You can make the bumble bee¡¯s wings out of the same material and the same way as the dragonfly wings, just make them smaller. Attach the bumble bee¡¯s wings to the top center of the bumble bee¡¯s body.

To make a creepy, crawly spider use a pompom or a colored cotton ball as the body. To make the spiders eyes you can either glue two or more small plastic eyes onto the body or paint several small dots for eyes onto the spider¡¯s body. To make the spider¡¯s eight legs you can use string, yarn, ribbon, or pipe cleaners. Take four pieces of equal length of yarn and crisscross them so that they look like eight spokes on a wheel, then tie, tape, sew, or glue the yarn to the spider¡¯s body to make the eight legs. Sewing the legs on would require an adults help, but might be necessary to make sure the legs are securely fastened to the spider¡¯s body.

To make the insects or other fun bugs move or fly, you can tie or sew a length of string around the middle of the finished bug. Make sure that the string has enough length so that the flying insect or bug can easily be swung over the head of or in front of the person¡¯s body who is playing with the bug or insect. The string for the spider will need to be long enough so that the spider can be lowered from a tree branch, or an over head porch railing or banister.
