Collecting wheat pennies is an easy and enjoyable hobby for any age. If you or your child wants to begin collecting coins, wheat pennies are probably the most inexpensive coins you can collect. Their dates run from 1909-1958, and they were started on the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln¡¯s birthday.

To get started, you probably want to invest in an up-to-date coin collecting book. This book will give you an idea of what particular wheat pennies are worth. You can use the book as a guide whether you are buying or selling. Before you begin your collection, you need to understand that there are differences in the conditions of a penny. The basic categories are based on a numbering system. The numbers range from AG-3 to MS-67. The AG stands for ¡°almost good¡±, and the MS stands for ¡°mint state¡±. 

If you have an AG-3 coin, it is typically in pretty poor condition. On the other hand, if you have an MS-67 coin, it is almost in perfect condition. After almost good, the ratings include good, very good, fine, very fine, extremely fine, then all of the MS ratings. MS rated wheat pennies are usually in such fine condition that only a magnifying glass can pick up defects and blemishes. Obviously, pennies that are in better conditions will have a higher value. 

The amount of wheat pennies minted also contributes to the value of that coin. Most beginning collectors start purchasing large lots of coins. You may find a lot of pennies that are advertised as ¡°unsearched¡±. While this may not be entirely true in every case, you should still be able to find a good variety of dates in the lot that you purchase.

Most collectors keep wheat penny books that they try to fill based on dates and mint marks. Mintmarks are the small letters located on the obverse (front) of the coin under the date. The mintmark will either be ¡°D¡± or ¡°S¡±, designating that the coin was minted in Denver or San Francisco. If the coin does not have a mintmark, it is understood that it was minted in Philadelphia. Once you have filled the basic slots of your wheat penny book, you will probably want to begin searching for the harder to find coins. You many never fill the book up entirely unless you plan on investing quite a bit more money for certain rare coins. 

The most sought after and expensive wheat penny is the 1909-S VDB penny. There were only 484,000 of these pennies minted. This coin sometimes sells for more than $1000 in extremely fine condition. Other more expensive coins include 1909-S, 1914-D, 1922-plain, and 1931-S. You don¡¯t have to complete your coin books, though, to have a good collection of coins. With more and more collectors buying and selling coins on the Internet, you have virtually unlimited resources, and you can buy and sell with ease. It is important to maintain a good reputation when buying and selling your wheat pennies. 

Be sure you advertise honestly. If a coin is in good shape but has a noticeable blemish, you need to make that clear. You should expect other collectors that you do business with to do the same. As you continue to build your collection, you will probably want to sell off some of the duplicate coins to finance some of the coins you don¡¯t have.  Collecting wheat pennies can be fun and relatively inexpensive. It is also a good investment because the price of coins continues to rise. Be prepared, though, collecting wheat pennies can become addictive.
