It¡¯s that time of year when the long awaited summer season has arrived and work outside on the lawn
has resumed as well. That¡¯s when you may notice brown patches showing up on your lawn and you have
no idea how to prevent it. With the easy steps outlined below, hopefully you will have your lawn
back to the green grass you desire.
First of all, we need to define what brown patches are exactly. Brown patches on the lawn, usually
circular in shape, are due to a fungal disease that is usually brought on by summer weather
conditions such as drought or high heat. The brown patches range in color from yellow to a deeper
hue of brown, and can spread quickly from a few inches to a diameter of a few feet.
Step one:
Water your lawn less frequently and don¡¯t over water your lawn to where there is no outlet for
excess water to run off since this may promote the brown patch. Also, the best time to water your
lawn is in the morning hours when the sun doesn¡¯t have a chance to dry the moisture in the lawn too
quickly.
Step two:
If you are fertilizing your lawn, apply the fertilizer evenly to the grass, since uneven application
of fertilizer such as too much in one particular area, can cause that area of grass to burn and
brown. If you already have brown patch on your yard, fertilizing that affected area can sometimes
make the brown patch worse.
Step Three:
Aerate your lawn, which is removing small areas of soil from your lawn. This will allow air and
nutrients to penetrate the lawn to the grass roots and therefore aid the brown patches. This will
also increase the water to the much needed areas of brown patch.
There are power aerators that you can rent at your local rental yard, which may make it easier to
aerate. Be sure to check which type of grass seed is planted on your lawn as this will determine
which time of year the aeration should be done. The warmer climate grasses should be aerated in the
late spring, with other kinds of grasses aerated in the fall.
Step Four:
Examine the soil where the brown patch or patches has occurred, since they usually appear in areas
of the grass that are under stress, for example, extra piles of dirt or sod over an area, bricks or
debris. To remedy this situation, try breaking up the soil to make sure the grass can root more
deeply and water can drain properly.
Step Five:
If there are brown irregular spots, this could possibly due to infestation by insects such as the
chinch bug or grub bug. These brown spots usually appear along the foundations of houses, driveway,
and sidewalks. If you suspect the brown spots are from insects then you should proceed with
insecticide treatment.
Most people would like to have a lush, green lawn and knowing preventive measures to take ahead of
time for the caring of your lawn, will hopefully deter brown patch from occurring on your lawn.
