If you are the new owner of a golden retriever puppy, then you have probably already realized that this dog will be your biggest fan, faithful companion, and loyal friend. You may have also realized that your puppy has boundless energy, at least right before he collapses for one of his many puppy naps. Owning a puppy is a little like becoming a new parent. Puppies require a lot of attention, much like babies. Puppies need to be fed often, housebroken, and taught good habits. Feeding and playing with your new puppy should be quite easy. Training your puppy, however, can be a little more challenging.

One advantage you will notice as a new owner is that golden retrievers are extremely intelligent dogs. They also have a great willingness to please their beloved owners. They just need to be shown what behaviors will please you. Whether you hope to see your puppy grow into a great hunter or award winning show dog, or whether you just want a family pet, all puppies need to be taught the basic commands before any more extensive training is begun. ¡°Sit¡±, ¡°stay¡±, and ¡°come¡± are the three most important commands you can teach your dog. Once your puppy can accomplish each of these, you will also want to teach him to obey the command ¡°heel¡±.

Before you begin your training lessons with your puppy, you need to decide on an appropriate way to respond to him when he disobeys you. You need to understand that more than likely his disobedience comes from his not understanding what it is that you want from him. Keeping this in mind, you don¡¯t want to create a fearful dog. You want to teach your dog to depend on you for commands, and to love and respect you in the process. Beating your dog every time he fails to obey a command will not develop respect, only fear. 

Successful dog trainers normally rely on a reward system. Reward doesn¡¯t necessarily mean food. If food is the only thing that motivates your dog, then you will have a problem if you are out with your dog, issue a command, but don¡¯t have any food as a reward. Your dog has an innate sense of love for you, and just like a child, will look to you for signs of approval. This is where praise should play an important part of the training process, and you can emphasize that praise with an occasional treat.

Consistency is very important when training your puppy. Keep your commands short and simple, and don¡¯t change them. As you begin to train your puppy to sit, you can say the command and gently push his bottom to the ground. Let the puppy stand back up, walk him around a little, and repeat the command, then push his bottom to the ground. You will only need to work with your puppy for ten or fifteen minutes and two or three times a day because of his short attention span. The important thing to remember is to do this daily until the command is second nature to your dog. When he can respond without help from you, give him lots of extra praise.

Once he has responded to the command ¡°sit¡±, it is time to move on to ¡°stay¡±. Here again you will need to be consistent with your command word and work with him several times for short periods of time. Once you have commanded him to ¡°sit¡±, hold your hand out towards him like a policeman halts traffic and firmly say ¡°stay¡±. Of course, he won¡¯t understand at first and will want to come to you. Have him sit again, hold your hand out and issue a command. If he disobeys you, firmly tell him, ¡°no¡±, and try it again. Once he is sitting and staying on your command, you will need to give him some signal that he can come to you, and be consistent with this signal, such as whistling or patting your leg. 

The command ¡°come¡± is probably the easiest to teach your puppy because he wants to be with you. If you can¡¯t get your puppy to come to you simply by calling him, you will need to place a collar and long leash on him. Have him sit and stay, then say ¡°come¡± while gently tugging on his collar. If he responds, praise him. You can also give him a treat occasionally during the training session. 

Finally, you need to teach your dog to heel. This will make taking your dog for a leisurely walk much more enjoyable for you both. He needs to learn to walk beside you not pull ahead of you. Place a leash on your dog, and keep it shortened so that he is beside you as you walk. Decide which side you want him to walk on and be consistent with that side every time you walk him. As he walks beside you say, ¡°heel¡±. If he starts to run ahead, gently tug him back to your side and repeat the heel command. Do not jerk on your puppy¡¯s neck, as this could injure him. If he obeys your command, you can stop and praise him, then move forward.

Training your puppy not only creates a better-behaved dog but also a more enjoyable one. A trained dog is also easier to keep safe as they will respond quickly to your voice during times of danger. Although training your dog takes time, you and your dog will both be grateful that you took the time to teach him these commands, and you will both reap the benefits of time spent together.
