If you are the owner of a golden retriever, then you probably are already familiar with many of the dog¡¯s wonderful characteristics. It is hard to find a more loyal canine breed than the golden retriever. His main purpose in life is to please you. Once you realize this, training your golden to hunt shouldn¡¯t just be a chore but instead a pleasant time that you can spend bonding with your friend. 

While golden retrievers are normally desperate to please, however, this doesn¡¯t necessarily mean they will immediately understand what you want them to do. This is where the problem usually lies, and it will take a lot of patience from you until the commands you give are clearly understood by your dog.  Don¡¯t be discouraged. If you are serious about hunting, you may have checked into your dog¡¯s genetic background, searching for good hunting bloodlines. Your dog can be developed into a good hunter, though, even if he doesn¡¯t have a champion in his pedigree. Persistence and patience are the two key words that you need to keep in mind when working with your golden. 

Before you begin training your dog to hunt, you need to be certain that he has mastered the ¡°sit¡±, ¡°stay¡±, ¡°come¡±, and ¡°heel¡± commands. You can¡¯t properly instruct him on the various hunting terms until you have control of your dog. You will need to buy a hunting collar, a checkcord, a blank pistol, a whistle, and some retrieving bumpers with artificial scent.

You¡¯ll begin your training by using the artificially scented bumpers in a game of fetch. Most trainers have two basic commands to begin with. When a dog sees the object that he is to retrieve, you should send him to get that object by saying his name. This object is known as a ¡°mark¡±. If you send a dog in search of an object that he cannot see, which is called a ¡°blind¡±, you can say ¡°back¡±. As you begin your game of fetch with your dog, let him start out immediately fetching, but then gradually hold him back for longer periods at a time, building his anticipation. You can then give him a command and let him go. Be sure and issue the ¡°stay¡± command until you want him to begin retrieval. Give plenty of praise when he does retrieve.

You also want to teach your dog to run in the direction that you point. This is called a ¡°line¡±. To develop this skill, line up several scented bumpers and instruct him to retrieve. He¡¯ll probably retrieve the closest one. Praise him, and then you can send him to the next one. Practicing this drill will teach him to follow certain paths.  Once you are satisfied that he understands these concepts, it will be time to move onto handling techniques. You want to teach the dog to retrieve the bird that you want him to retrieve, not the one he might want to retrieve. If you have two birds down, one might be dead, and one might only be injured. You will want him to get the injured bird first, since the dead bird will be easy to retrieve later. 

When training your dog, use the checkcord to restrain and focus him. You will need to throw a mark in a particular direction. Make sure that the dog is looking at you after he has watched the mark land, and point your arm toward the mark, saying ¡°over¡±. Release him. If he goes to the mark and retrieves it, praise him. If he doesn¡¯t, try again. You will need to repeatedly work on this drill until he responds to the direction of your arm and your command. 

After he has mastered retrieval with one mark, begin tossing out several and direct him to the ones you want in various orders. As you call him back, you can emphasize your command by blowing your whistle. Once he has become proficient at retrieving these marks, place some blind bumpers in the area, and practice directing him to these. While you are training your dog, use your blank pistol as you throw marks so he will be accustomed to the sound of a gun and not shy away. Once your dog retrieves well on land, you will need to do the same training techniques in the water. With patience and experience, you and your dog can become a great hunting team together.
