Tissue paper flowers are the basic ingredient to a colorful and successful parade float. They also work wonderfully for craft projects for children and cheap decorations for any number of events. One of the best bonuses is that with one basic lesson you can move on to make large, creative flowers. Each step of the project is full of different methods of making your own original flower.
For the most basic flower, you¡¯ll need two things: Tissue paper and some type of tie. The best tool here is usually a pipe cleaner, but you can make due with garbage bag ties, paper clips, or wire. When you¡¯re choosing your tie, be sure to take into consideration how you will attach your flower to the float. Another thing to think about is the age group that will be making your flowers. Because this is an activity that many small children enjoy, pipe cleaners again are the safest choice.
Take the tissue paper and make what is known as an accordion fold. This is the same method you¡¯d use for a paper fan: fold along the width once, using usually about 1/10 of the length. You can vary the length of the fold to vary the dimensions of the flower.
Now flip the paper over, and take the folded edge. Bring that edge up, making a new fold the same length as the previous one. Repeat this process until the entire sheet of tissue paper is folded neatly.
Now take your tie, and place it in the middle of your folded paper. You can choose to scrunch the paper into a narrow width in the middle, or keep it flat. As with most of the variables in this project, it¡¯s best to experiment to see what look works best for your float.
Now, take one side of the paper, and pull the opposite ends apart. Do the same to the other side. This gives you the most basic of paper flowers, a flat ¡°bow.¡±
Now you can take that basic principle and play with it! The best way to make fuller flowers is to stack several sheets of tissue paper together before accordion folding the stack into one folded piece. Then you can pull the ends apart and ¡°fluff¡± the paper to make the desired shape and size that you¡¯d like.
Other techniques include using layers of different colored paper, or even different widths of paper to create unique shapes and color designs. The larger the original sheet of tissue paper, the larger the flower. All it takes for a beautiful bouquet is imagination and a few cheap supplies.
Using green pipe cleaners can create an effective ¡°stem¡± for the flowers, or they can be easily attached to wooden dowel rods using some pipe cleaner and strong glue.
The only word of caution is that when constructing a float, try to overestimate your supplies. While there are always other uses for tissue paper and pipe cleaners, your float¡¯s appearance might suffer if you run out of blue and the store doesn¡¯t have that proper shade in stock.
Paper flowers are limited only by the amount of imagination and creativity you¡¯re willing to apply! |
