While most house cats are quite docile, occasionally a cat shows aggressive tendencies and may demonstrate aggression toward other pets or people. Often the aggression can be controlled, keeping the household happy and calm.
First, consider possible sources of the aggression. If a previously docile cat has suddenly become aggressive, look for things that may have changed in the environment or with the cat. Occasionally, aggression is a sign that the cat is unwell or feeling pain so if nothing else has changed a veterinary exam may be advisable.
Often, cats deal with change in their homes by displaying aggression. A cat may react negatively to a new family member in the home, a new pet or a move. In these instances, try to be understanding of the cat¡¯s needs while demonstrating that the cat¡¯s new behavior is inappropriate.
Other felines are more aggressive by nature. In some instances, they believe aggression is an acceptable form of play and can be easily taught to tone it down. Whatever the cause, if you are dealing with an aggressive cat, consider trying one ¨C or more ¨C of the following methods and treatments.
Behavioral
While you want to show your cat that its aggressive behavior is not acceptable, never respond to it with your own aggression. It is better to stay as calm as possible while showing the cat it needs to change its behavior. Try some of the following methods:
-Remove the cat to an isolated area for a brief ¡°time out¡±. Like toddlers, cats do not like to be removed from the fun and will often understand that their naughty behavior will get them banished for a brief while
-A spritz of water is a harmless way to discourage a cat from a given behavior. Keep clean spray bottles with ¡°stream¡± functions handy and give the cat a spritz whenever it shows aggression inappropriately.
- Your cat doesn¡¯t mind water? Try filling a soda can with some gravel or a few coins and shake it when the cat acts up. Most cats dislike the noise immensely.
Pheromones
If your cat has started acting aggressive since you have introduced a new feline companion into your home, you may want to consider pheromone treatment. First, ensure you have introduced the cats slowly, keeping them separated for a time and making the transition as gradual as possible. A cat pheromone marketed as ¡°Feliway¡± can be used in your home to make the environment seem friendlier to all of your cats making them feel less territorial. Introducing this airborne pheromone through a spray or small plug-in dispensers often makes all of the cats more comfortable and accepting of one another. It is available at most major pet stores.
Homeopathic solutions
Some people have reported remarkable success using homeopathic treatments for cat aggression. Flower essences, sold as liquid drops that may be given to the cat directly or added to food or water, work on the traits causing the cat to be aggressive. A few drops of Holly essence can help curb jealousy; Chicory essence assists with those who must be in control and can help in the instance of two alpha cats battling for turf. Willow essence works on resentments and may help with a cat having difficulty accepting a new baby in the family.
Medical
If none of the other treatments have curbed your cat¡¯s aggression, it is probably time to seek assistance from your veterinarian. A number of prescription medications have been shown to dramatically reduce aggressive behavior. Anti-anxiety medications such as Buspirone or Fluoxetine may help. Some vets may recommend administering it to a cat being attacked by the aggressive cat in the home as well, to help the more timid cat deal with the difficult situation.
