Are you and your spouse expecting a little one? Then you're probably fixing up a spare bedroom in your house or apartment for a nursery. After you paint the room and pick out the furniture, you'll also need to think about adding bookshelves. Bookshelves are more suitable than a bookcase for a baby nursery. Why? Because a bookcase is too easy for your baby to climb up on once he or she is old enough. An important aside here: you should secure lightweight changing tables, desks, and other such furniture to the wall so your baby can't climb on them and knock them over.
You can easily build and hang bookshelves in your baby's nursery in less than a day's time. To start this project, you'll need to decide how long and wide you want the shelves to be. These measurements will probably be determined by the size of the room and what you are going to store on them. (When you are deciding where to hang the shelves, use a stud finder to locate at least one stud inside the wall.) In addition to books, shelves can also hold items that you want to keep out of your baby's reach. These can include a baby monitor, clock, a cordless telephone, and more.
Next, purchase some pine boards- approximately one quarter to one half inch thick - nails or wood screws, some heavy duty metal shelf hangers, and enamel paint that coordinates with the rest of the nursery decor.
Let's say that you have decided to build bookshelves that measure three feet wide, are eight inches deep, and are two feet tall. The first step is to use a tape measure to measure and cut two boards that are three feet long and eight inches wide; these will be the top and the bottom of the bookshelves. You'll also need two more boards that measure eight inches wide and are two feet long; these will serve as the sides.
Dry fit the boards together, then secure them together at the corners by using either a hammer and nails or a screwdriver and wood screws. You now have completed building the cabinet.
Then, measure and cut two more boards that will fit inside the cabinet. These will serve as inside shelves. The top of the cabinet can also be used as a shelf. Carefully use a tape measure to find out what the exact inside measurements of the cabinet are. This will tell you exactly how long the shelves will need to be. (These shelves will be eight inches wide.)
Fit the shelves, one at a time, into the cabinet, and have your spouse or an assistant hold them while you secure them in place with either nails or wood screws.
Now that you have built the bookshelves, before you secure them to the wall of the nursery, you'll need to lightly smooth them down with sandpaper. Make sure that you especially smooth down any rough edges. Remove the sanding dust by using an old, soft rag.
Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions on the enamel paint container before you begin to coat the bookshelves.
After the bookshelves are thoroughly dry, attach the heavy-duty shelf hangers to them. (Follow the manufacturer's instructions in order to achieve the best results.) Then, place long nails or screws into the walls so the hangers fit over them.
Finally, hang your new bookshelves up!
