I fell in love with kerosene lamps while attending my aunt¡¯s estate auction with my new fianc¨¦ over 30 years ago.  I bid on a large kerosene lamp with a cobalt blue base in a ¡°bull¡¯s eye¡± pattern because it was pretty and because I wanted to keep a part of my beloved aunt in my new home.  I bought the lamp for seven dollars.  Before I left the auction, an antique dealer offered fourteen dollars for my kerosene lamp.  I kept the lamp and it still sits proudly in my home beside another cherished antique ¨C my husband.  

Kerosene lamps came into existence in the mid-nineteenth century.  For most people, they replaced either candlelight or the more dangerous lamps fueled by oil derived from whales or from combustible fluid made from a blend of turpentine or alcohol.  The kerosene lamp was a dramatic and safer improvement.   

Antique lanterns are still quite collectable, but if you wish to actually use a kerosene lamp regularly and don¡¯t wish to use your expensive antiques, there are several brands and locations where kerosene lamps can still be purchased today.  Kerosene lamps are often used for decorative purposes, but some are still depended upon for illumination on a regular basis or during power outages.  Today some are even used out of doors and filled with special oils designed to repel insects.

When you are ready to use your kerosene lamp, make sure the lamp is located in a well-ventilated area.  First, fill the bowl (reservoir) area with lamp oil specifically designed for oil lamp purposes.  Never use gasoline or other dangerous fuels.  You can use any good grade of fresh, clean, refined kerosene or commercial lamp oil.  You may not want to use scented lamp oil, however, as that can cause damage to the wick and affect the operation of the lamp.  The easiest oil to use is the commercial oil prepared specifically for oil lanterns and recommended by the manufacturer. 

If the lamp reservoir has been dry and the wick is dry or new, make sure you allow for the wick to soak in the kerosene or lamp oil for an hour or two before you attempt to light the lamp.  When you are ready to light your lamp, make sure you remove the chimney without removing the burner and wick.  Turn the wick up slightly above the tube (about an eighth of an inch should be enough) and then light the wick.  When the top edge the wick is in flame, replace the chimney and turn the wick up very slowly to increase your flame.  You will want to increase the flame slowly to avoid over-burning and smoke.  If you have the color of orange in your flame, you are burning too quickly.  Burning too hot and too quickly is dangerous and can damage your kerosene lamp.  Make sure you monitor your kerosene lamp and never leave the room while it is burning.  Always extinguish the flame completely if you leave the room.  You also don¡¯t want your kerosene lamp to burn dry as that will damage your wick.  To extinguish the light in your kerosene lamp, make sure to use the wick-winder knob to turn the wick down just below the wick tube until the flame disappears.  Also, you should blow gently into the burner as if blowing out a match to assist in extinguishing the flame.  To make sure that you have extinguished the flame, raise the wick again and visually inspect it.  

To care for your kerosene lamp, it is important to handle all parts of it very carefully as the glass and fiber parts are usually quite delicate.  Keep your lamp clean and properly assembled.  Soot should be removed from the mantle and chimney area as soon as possible. The chimney can be cleaned with a mild soap and water mixture. Keeping the lamp clean not only prolongs the longevity of your lamp and makes it aesthetically appealing, but it is also a safety issue as soot and dust become dangerous when exposed to an open flame. 

Familiarize yourself with each piece of your lamp and know which parts need to stay securely together at each step of the lighting and usage process.  Different styles of kerosene lamps have different requirements and there are many books and websites that can help you identify the type of lamp you have and how best to use it.  

Make it a routine to keep your lamp filled and cleaned.  Take all necessary precautions and steps in maintenance when using your lamp and it will give you many years of soft, romantic light that can make the other antiques in your house look pretty good.  Even after thirty years.
