Every one knows that the odds are not in the favor of gamblers. Almost all gamblers lose, rather than make, money. However, some gamblers beat the odds, at least every once it a while. This possible, although highly unlikely, success is just enough to give some gamblers hope that they will win if they just play one more time. And when people do win, they sometimes think that their winning streak will last forever. Unfortunately, this kind of thinking can leave to financial ruin. Gamblers need to know how to leave while they are ahead.

The easiest way to resist the temptation to gamble too much is to plan ahead. Before ever entering a casino, race track, or any other place of gambling, gamblers need to decide how much money they can afford to lose. Then, they should bring that amount of money and no more; credit cards especially are best left at home. They should also ask their friends not to lend them any money. This way, once gamblers have spent all the money they have on them, they are forced to quit for the day no matter how good a feeling they have about the next round.

Although this plan will keep gamblers from losing too much money in one night, it will not help gamblers keep any profits that they are lucky enough to make. In order to have any chance of coming out on top, gamblers need to do a little more planning. Before going out, gamblers should decide what percentage of any profits will be pocketed and what percentage will be reinvested into gambling. For example, one gambler might decide that he will pocket 50 percent of his profits and continue gambling with the other 50 percent. 

However, because the profits are with the gambler, saving some of the profits can take a lot of willpower. If necessary, the money can be given to a trusted friend to hold. Gamblers should also let their friends know that they do not want to gamble too much; this way, their friends might call them on it if they start to get a bit carried away. Some gamblers might even be less likely to gambler excessively in front of their friends lest it appear as though they have a problem. 

Additionally, gamblers should try to think logically about gambling. Remember, all winning streaks must end eventually. The house always has the advantage; otherwise, no casinos could ever stay in business. People who win are lucky, and they need to realize that their luck will not last. Winners should be happy that they won and move on.

Planning ahead, going with a trusted friend, and remembering to think logically are all valid tips that can help an occasionally reckless gambler. However, people who have serious gambling problems or think they could develop serious gambling problems should really just avoid gambling altogether. Even if they are trying to be careful, gamblers can always find a way to continue gambling far beyond what should have been quitting time.
