Growing cucumbers is easy and fun with these special gardening tips. Follow these helpful hints and you'll soon have a bumper crop of cucumbers grown with the least amount of work possible. 

1. Use a weed killer to kill visible weeds before tilling the soil for gardening. Till the soil when all danger of frost is gone. After tilling, remove large rocks and fertilize the soil. Rake or push the soil into a mound that is at least 7 inches high. Poke four holes ? - ? inch deep in the top of the mound and put one cucumber seed in each hole. Pickling cucumbers are great for eating and pickling. The skin is not bitter at all, and even though they are smaller than slicing cucumbers, you won't have to grow two types of cucumbers. Keep the seeds moist until they sprout.

2. Make sure that the mounds in your garden are at least six feet apart. This is not standard advice, but a special way to ensure the best crop possible. 

3. Once the seeds start making leaves with the tendrils, put a tomato cage so that you can train the vines up the cage. Spend some time each day training the vines in the garden so that they go around and up the cage. The beauty of this tip is that you'll have fewer insects and the cucumbers will be easier to pick than if you let the vines run along the ground. Plus, because there are fewer insects, your growing season will be longer. 

4. After the vines have covered the tomato cage, stick bamboo poles or wooden stakes that are six feet high about 2-3 feet from the cage. Make a line of string from the cage to the poles and stakes and wind it around at different points on the stakes so that you wind up with a maze of strings.

5. Keep training the cucumber vines onto the strings. What you'll wind up with is a square looking maze that is covered in cucumber vines. 

6. Good gardening includes an extra round of fertilizer. Fertilize the cucumbers weekly with a liquid fertilizer (but don't spray the leaves ¨C wet the ground underneath the leaves so the leaves don't develop powdery mildew. Or, you can use granular fertilizer sprinkled around the ground and then wet the soil. If you choose the latter method, you'll only need to fertilize about six weeks into the growing season. 

7. One of the special tips about growing cucumbers is that you need to keep the cucumbers picked constantly after the vines start producing. By doing this, you will encourage the plants to make more vegetables. If you don't pick the cucumbers daily, you will have a shorter growing season and your yield won't be as high.

8. Watch for insects. Use your favorite method of controlling insects, whether it is organic or chemical. One special tip is that if you remove and destroy the eggs as soon as you see them on the leaves, you will be able to keep most of the cucumber pests at bay. This gardening tip is good for other crops as well.

9.Cucumbers need a lot of water. Make sure that you water your garden cucumbers every day if possible, but only in the morning and, of course, not when it is going to rain. A soaker hose is the best method of watering cucumbers and other vegetables because it prevents the water from getting on the leaves. It also deep soaks the roots.

10. You may find that you only need one mound of cucumbers in your garden by growing them with these tips. You will have more than enough cucumbers to keep, pickle and give away.
