Collecting autographs of your favorite celebrities has been a popular hobby for a long time now.  There is something to meeting a celebrated star and getting that star's signature. Here are some things to think about when collecting your autographs.

Some people go after just about any celebrity they can find while others focus on certain groups.  Really if a person is collecting autographs for a collection they should focus on those celebrities that they really admire and are real fans of.  If you are collecting for value that can get trickier and in such a case you really need to go after just about any autograph you can.  It really is hard to tell just whose autograph will be worth the most in the long run.  As a celebrity's fame goes up and down so will the value of their autographs.  An autograph that is highly sought after and valuable today could be worthless tomorrow if the celebrity falls in popularity.  That is a big chance you take when dealing with collecting autographs for value.

Most decisions about collecting autographs does come down to why you are collecting.  Some stars will personalize the autograph if you wish it, but normally those autographs are not worth as much as just the person's signature.  If you are collecting for a personal collection the personalized autographs give a better sense of you having meet the celebrity.  So issues such as personalization of the autograph come down to if you are more concerned with monetary value of the signature or personal value of it.

Most celebrities prefer to autograph something that has a connection to them.  Generally they sign pictures of themselves, but often they will sign copies of movies they have been in or action figures made of their characters or movie poster and such.  Some will sign items that they have some link to as a novelty.  I was once at an auction where a group of authors had all signed a toilet seat.  One of the decisions in building an autograph collection is if you wish to stick with pictures or if you are going to try and find other unique items to get autographed.

Most autograph collecting focuses on a person's interests. If you enjoy Soap Operas you will most likely wish to collect the autographs of your favorite Soap Stars.  If you read a lot, getting the books signed by the author is generally a desired thing.  Science fiction fans can get very fanatical about getting an actor who has played their favorite character to sign for them.  Those interested in music get enjoyment out of getting their CD collection signed.  There really are many different areas in which autographs can be given that fit with just about all interest that are out there.

Many times autographs are given in certain places where the celebrity has already agreed to sit down and give autographs.  Most of the time in such a situation there is some kind of fee for the autograph.  There will be occasions where the celebrity is willing to give his or her signature to fans on the street, but remember that celebrities are people too and there will be times when they do not wish to be bothered by fans as they go about their daily business.  When seeking autographs try to be respectful of the celebrities.
