When it comes to the beauty and care of our lawn we take pride in our hard work and when the discovery of a broken sprinkler system timer threatens that, we do the only logical thing by stepping into high gear and purchasing a new timer. While it's one thing to purchase a new timer, it's another when it comes to installing one and a job that can scare even the most experienced of lawn owners. 

If you're replacing an old timer or simply installing a new one the task at hand is not as difficult as it may seem. 

To replace an old timer you'll want to start by labeling the wires connected to your old timer with a masking tape. 

Next disconnect the wires, remove the old timer and you're ready to install the new timer. 

Once you have positioned and mounted the new timer in place, connect all of the labeled wires into the correct station of the new timer. 

Plug the timer into the power supply and your new timer should be operational. 

Be sure to follow the instructions that come with your new timer and always make sure your timer is made for outdoor use before you attempt to mount your timer outside. 

If you're installing a new timer you'll first want to choose the location depending on whether it is an indoor or outdoor timer.

If the timer will be going outside be sure that it is in a weatherproof box and dry location. For an indoor timer, the specifications should be the same in addition to keeping the timer out of direct sunlight. 

For safety purposes avoid installing your new timer on the same wall as any other high voltage products or an outlet controlled by an on/off switch.

Next mount the timer according to your package's instructions. Most instructions will consist of mounting the timer with screws, but if your walls are made of plaster or any other material that is not easily capable of holding heavy objects, you may want to use plastic anchors to hold the timer securely into place.

If you timer has a battery backup for power outages, connect the required size battery into the battery terminal and place it in its designated position. 

Next connect the common wire from the valve which is usually white to the station labeled COM of your new timer. Now connect the first hot wire which is usually red to the correct labeled station of the timer and then do the same with the second hot wire usually green, to the correct labeled station of the timer.

You'll then need to purchase and connect irrigation wiring to each valve. The valves will have two wires, one being the ground wire usually white, and the other the circuit wire usually a color such as red. To connect the ground wires to the timer use wire nuts and do the same for the circuit wires using screws.

Connect the timer to the power supply and turn the timer's dial to automatic. Follow the directions on the timer's display to set the desired times to water and you're on your way to a beautiful lawn once again. Enjoy!
