Ferrets have been featured in movies for years.  Arnold Schwarzenegger had one in his classroom in the movie Kindergarten Cop.  In the recent movie Along Came Polly, Jennifer Aniston had a ferret that she took on walks through the city.  And what camera wouldn¡¯t love a ferret, they look cute, cuddly and playful.  Actually some are just as cute and cuddly as they look, but some ferrets might not want as much attention as you might want to give them.  They can be great pets, but they are not quite as low maintenance as one might think.  Before you go out and buy one, there are seven basic things you should learn about them.  

1) Ferrets are not part of the rodent family.  They are actually in the same family as, believe it or not, skunks.  They certainly do not smell as offensive as a pet skunk would, but ferrets do give off a strong odor.  Usually, if the ferret is confined to a cage in one room of the house, that room is the only one in the house that will smell like ferret.  Of course, if the cage bedding is not cleaned regularly, you¡¯ll be dealing with a stronger odor.  To eliminate the musky smell of your ferret, take it to the vet and have it de-scented.   

2) Unlike the rodents that ferrets are mistaken for, they live more than just two or three years.  Ferrets can live two or three times the life span of a mouse, up to six or seven years.  If you want a more long term pet, a ferret is not the best choice.  Also, if you just want to try out a pet short-term, a ferret is not the pet for you.  

3) Ferrets shed!  The ferret sheds his entire coat twice a year.  That¡¯s a lot of hair loss to deal with, especially if you plan to let the ferret roam the house like a cat would.  They require additional grooming practices, too.  Ferrets need to be given baths when they get dirty.  Occasionally, their nails need to be trimmed and their ears need to be cleaned.

4) Like a cat, ferrets can be trained to use a litter box.  If you don¡¯t plan on keeping your ferret caged, litter box training is a great idea.  Along came Polly didn¡¯t  fabricate the idea of a ferret on a leash.  Your ferret actually can be trained to walk on a leash, just like a dog.  

5) You might never have considered that a ferret needs to be spayed or neutered but if yours female isn¡¯t spayed, she is at high risk of developing a deadly disease called aplastic anemia.  

6) Ferrets stay pretty small.  A full grown adult will weight anywhere from three to five pounds depending on sex and genetics.  

7) It used to be illegal to own a ferret in many states. While this is mostly no longer true, check the regulations in your area to make sure ferrets are allowed as house pets.
