It seems like such a shame to throw out all of those jeans that you and your kids outgrow, or that becomes out of style. Here are some things you can do to recycle those old favorites instead.
1. Make Pillows: Cut off the legs from the upper part of the jeans. Turn the remaining section inside out and sew the openings shut using a sewing machine. Fill your new pillow covering with a pre-made pillow form and close the remaining opening with Velcro. You can also use the legs of the jeans to make bolster pillows.
2. Make Purses: Remove the waste band from the jeans and re-use it as a purse strap. Cut two large squares or rectangles out of your jeans. Using the seat part is preferable as it provides extra functioning pockets.
3. Make a bed skirt: Sew together the seats of multiple pairs of jeans with sections of leg fabric in between. Keep the pockets on these sections in place so you can later use them to store little things you may need at your bedside like a nail clipper, hair bands, and possibly a blindfold. Attach your new bed skirt to your box spring or bed frame using Velcro.
4. Create a patchwork duvet cover: Cut your old jeans into four-inch squares. Sew them together, alternating light colored and dark colored jeans to create a pattern. Once your quilt is complete, sew it to a flat sheet leaving one side open in which to slip your comforter. Using a tool you can purchase at the fabric store, snaps to the opening.
5. Recycle your jeans into skirts: Open the inside seams of the jeans. Once this is done, lay them flat and you will see that a v-shaped section needs to be filled with denim from another pair of jeans. You can choose to have the inserted pieces match or not. Adding a contrasting piece of denim will make the result more interesting. Cut the skirt into any length you choose.
6. Make chair seat covers: Cut a pair of jeans into three-inch wide strips equal to the length or width of the seat. Staple half of the strips to the chair seat all in the same direction. Make sure they touch each other. Then weave the other strips in the opposite direction and staple them to the ends to the bottom of the seat.
7. Lampshade: Cover an old lampshade with a continuous strip of denim fabric that has been cut from old jeans. Start at the top of the shade, wrapping and gluing the fabric to the shade until it is completely covered.
8. Make wall hangings: Make fun wall hangings for your kid¡¯s room by cutting out shapes of light colored denim and sewing it to dark colored denim background, or vice-versa. You can make animal shapes, or a simple geometric pattern. This is a great piece of wall art to use in a room where other items are denim. You can staple this art into a simple frame.
9. Hanging storage: Make large pockets by sewing squares of denim onto a canvas background. Make a row of pockets either vertically or horizontally. Hang it by adding grommets and hooks, or by attaching it to a hanger.
10. Make draft dodges: Fill the legs of discarded jeans with stuffing and sew the ends closed. Use it in front of doors to block drafts. |
