Learning to surf in a group has many benefits ranging from social to economical.  Individual lessons can be great also, but you'll find some added benefits when learning to surf in a group.  Good thing there are lessons available for all types at any age and any skill level.  Surfing in groups provides the best social experience when learning to surf, but also the most economical.  All newbies start on soft-top surfboards and will learn how to do pop-ups.   Pop-up is the term used to describe the movement done to get yourself from lying flat the board while paddling, to an upright standing position prior to getting on the surfboard.  You will practice pop-ups over and over on the sand before getting in the water.  It's something of a silly exercise, and something you might appreciate not doing solo on the beach somewhere.  You will also learn ocean awareness, priority rules (this determines who catches the waves that come up when more than one surfer is waiting), paddling, proper style, and technique.

There are group lessons for everyone, depending on your location, if you look around a bit.  It is never too late to start, and instructors don't see age as a hindrance to learning.  All ages from four to 75 have been taught at some schools.   As long as you are a pretty strong swimmer and are comfortable in the water, pull on your flip-flops and swimsuit and head for the nearest surfing school.  The benefits of groups are that you can go with a group of your friends or family and bond over learning to surf together.  There are also surf clinics that run from one day up to seven days, and can take you from novice to intermediate in a short amount of time.  Corporate packages are available for company outings so co-workers can find something in common other than memos and deadlines.  If you prefer a little female bonding, a new kind of chick thing, there are many schools that cater to groups of women and girls so your whole group or clinic can be all female.  

Group surfing instruction is a great way to make new friends and meet new people that already share a common interest.  What better way to turn business associates into team players than to have them all doing pop-ups and catching baby waves at the same time?  It's an opportunity to see people you know in a totally different environment, learn a different side of them, and have a lot of fun at the same time.  Surfing schools cater to pretty much any type of group.  Pricing can vary depending on geographic location, instructor, length of lesson or lessons, and type of lessons.  You'll definitely pay more for private lessons than you will group lessons, in some places significantly, usually between $10 to $25 per hour more.  It becomes increasingly more expensive as you get into individual long-term instruction.  Group lessons can range anywhere from $10 for one lesson and $25 for two at one school, to about $75-95 to learn from a professional surfer or in an exotic locale.  Lessons, private or group, run about an hour or two.  Surf clinics can run from three to five hours in one day to five hours a day for seven consecutive days.  Clinics come with intensive training on the basics, fine-tuning on technique, and at some schools even video analysis of your recent surfing performance.  Surf clinics, or surf camps as they are also called, can run anywhere from five to 25 people.  With a surf camp you may have the additional benefit of going on a retreat or a vacation to learn to surf, with additional cost.  Pricing for just the group surfing instruction can run from $225 per day up to as high as $1400 for a seven day camp.
