Collections of any type often defy the organizational abilities of the best of us. When it comes to storage solutions that not will not only protect but also display a collection, we are oftentimes even more at a loss. A baseball cap collection has even one more element that must be a major consideration, which is keeping it clean, unlike a collection of figurines, for example, where if they become dusty could be carefully washed.

A collection of caps is never just a few, either; it usually consists of at the least a dozen or usually many, many more. With each cap approximately 6¡± x 10¡± and about 5¡± high, a few caps really eat up space. Even with folding the back of the cap in to save a few inches, you still have an enormous amount of area with even a dozen. Storage and display can be accomplished though with some initial planning. 

Not Every Cap is a Collectible

The best way to make a display feasible is to define what exactly you are organizing for the display. A cap can be in perfect condition with not a visible mark on it, and a second could be dirty, torn and as ratty as a hat can be.  Which is the collectible? Most likely the well-worn one is; my point being that you need to define to yourself why each hat is in your collection. If it is ¡®just there¡¯, consider removing it from your collection.

Display and Store

There are numerous options available to help you display your caps. Some, such as a board that resembles a baseball bat with pegs, can be a quick way to exhibit a few caps, but this will leave them exposed to dust. Another option is a glass-covered dome made to highlight a cap with a few additional mementos such as a ticket stub and ball. The problem with this option is it really is not an option with a large collection. A wall or cabinet of cubbyholes can be a perfect solution. With each cap nesting within its own square, they are somewhat protected from dust. If your collection is of assorted colors, you could paint the whole assembly one single color, such as white or cream, or you could paint each pocket a separate color, or follow a team¡¯s color scheme. The nice thing about a storage display such as this is it allows the caps to both be on display and stored. You could also intersperse amongst the cubbyholes some other baseball collectibles: a favorite ball or two in one, a folded uniform in another, even turn one or two into shadowboxes so that you could display some items such as tickets or programs. Convert two or more squares at a time into one larger square for a striking display of several items at once. This will also break up the effect of a boring wall of squares. 

Storage

A good way to store your overflow of caps that you just are not going to part with but cannot display is to purchase a plastic storage container that is made for storing wrapping paper or other similar items. They have built in shelves similar to a tackle box but made for storing crafts. Wrap each cap lightly in acid free storage paper, put individually into the box, and store in a cool, dry place. As tempting as it is to toss them all together into a box and toss into a closet, avoid doing this as they will quickly lose shape and collect dust. Remember, the fun part of any collection, such as a baseball cap collection, is keeping a bit of the game alive through them, and a cap that has not weathered well due to bad storage is not a fun reminder of anything.
