Youth basketball is an exciting time for young children. For some, it is a first shot at participating in an organized sport. For others, it is another year of doing something they enjoy. Basketball has become the love of a nation, especially for children. How many kids do you know that want to be the next Michael Jordan? Well, here are some tips to help you parents, coaches, youth league volunteers and any one else that would like to develop better passers out of your children.
Before you can begin using passing drills in practice that require movement you must make sure that your children are able to pass the ball correctly in a stationary position. Once this goal has been accomplished, these passing drills will help your players develop more skills and become more confident and fluid in their passing game. These drills are not designed to teach your children how to pass. They are to be used as a practice enhancer.
Full Court Passing Drill 每 Pair off your group of children and place them in one or two lines, depending on the number of players on your team. Place each group on the baseline on opposite ends of the court. On your whistle, the players are going to jog beside each other using the pass you designate (ex. bounce or chest). This is not a race. The children should stay across from their partner or slightly ahead. Make sure that you emphasize leading their teammate with the pass. Once at the other end, they have a brief minute to rest before they begin again. When your players are more advanced, you can use this drill to practice lay-ups.
Monkey in the Middle 每 You need two basketballs. Have your players form a circle with one member in the middle. For young children start with a small circle and one ball and then enlarge the circle and add a second ball as their skills develop. Give one ball to the player in the middle and one ball to another team member. The player in the middle passes the ball around the circle while pivoting on his right or left foot (you designate). First they pass and then they receive a pass. Continue this around the circle. You can then change pivot feet or change monkeys. Ideally the monkey will develop a fluid motion as they move around the circle. A variation of this drill would be placing your players in a straight line, having the monkey pass up and down the line.
Three Man Weave 每 This drill can be completed two ways depending on the skill level of your players.
For beginners, place your players in three lines. Start with the ball in the middle. The player in the middle will pass to the player on the left and then receive the pass back. The middle player will then pass to the player on the right and receive the pass back. While they are passing the ball, the players are jogging to the other end of the court. This is not a race so the players need to stay together as a team. Just like the full court passing drill you want to have your players lead their teammates with the ball. Once your children are comfortable with this part you can add the weave.
Adding the weave 每 Starting with the line on the left, number the lines 1, 2, and 3. The first person in line 1 and 3 begin jogging up court as 2 passes the ball to 1. Two follows the pass and takes one*s place. One passes the ball to 3 and follows the ball taking three*s place. Three passes the ball to 2, following the pass and taking two*s place. The players must always go behind their teammate when moving in this drill. They continue this weave until they reach the opposite end of the court. Once they have become comfortable with this you can add a bounce pass and lay-up at the end.
Four Corners 每 This drill is designed as a half court drill with the players evenly divided on the four corners. With young children you can adjust the distance to meet their skill and ability level. You need two balls for this drill.
Option One 每 The first person in line 1 and 3 will have a ball. The first person in line 1 will pass to the first person in line 2, while the first person in line 3 passes to the first person in line 4. The person in line 4 then passes to the next person in line 1 and the person in line 2 passes to the next person in line three. Your players can start and stop on your whistle. Each player follows their pass and jogs to the end of that line.
Option Two 每 The fist person in line 1 and 2 will have a ball. Line 1 passes to line 3 and line 2 passes to line 4. The players will be making an X with their passes. Instead of following their pass this time the player simply jogs to the end of the line on their right.
These simple passing drills should bring excitement to any youth basketball practice.
