Wooden boat shows and festivals are becoming more popular every year.  This is due in part to the huge resurgence of interest in the craft of wooden boat building and the popularity of this craft among do-it-yourselfers who are building all manner of wooden boats in backyards and garages.  In today¡¯s high-tech world of synthetics and plastics, people crave the beauty and tradition of natural materials such as wood, and boat building can be one of the highest expressions of wood artistry.  Almost everyone loves to look at boats, and particularly a lovingly crafted wooden vessel with classic lines and sweet curves.

One popular highlight of many wooden boat shows is the ¡°quick and dirty boat building contest.¡±  This is a fun event open to amateur and professional boat builders who feel up to the challenge of building a boat from start to finish in just two days, with a launching and race of the completed vessels at the end of the second day.  The competitors start with an equal amount of plywood, adhesive caulk, and boat nails and must design and construct their boats right on sight under the gaze of hundreds of curious spectators.  Watching this process is always fun for the entire family.  Some of the designs that are produced in such a frenzy of work are surprisingly good-looking and functional, while others are downright ugly and ridiculous-looking.  The launching is the best part. The crowd gathers round to see which boats will float and which ones will disintegrate upon contact with the water.  Some of them almost always perform surprisingly well, and some even feature complete sailing rigs.  The best competitors in these events have worked out their designs in advance and waste no time once the clock starts ticking and the building is allowed to commence.  

Since most wooden boat shows are hosted or sponsored by maritime museums, they are usually held on the premises of the museum and a tour of the exhibits there adds another dimension to the boat show experience.  To accommodate larger vessels that cannot be moved on trailers, most wooden boat shows take place on a waterfront with available docking, and this makes it possible for the owners of larger wooden craft such as sailing and motor yachts to show their vessels as well.  Many of these yacht owners graciously open their doors to the visiting crowd, allowing interested admirers to come aboard and have a look around.  Visitors should respect the owner¡¯s courtesy by wearing only deck shoes or removing their shoes before going aboard.  

Not all of the wooden boats displayed at a wooden boat show are just for admiration.  You will always find some that are for sale, from the smallest dinghies and canoes to the largest yachts.  If you are interested in a specific design that is not available, you will likely find a professional boat builder that can be commissioned to build the vessel of your dreams.  Be forewarned that if you are a lover of boats, especially fine wooden boats, visiting a boat show can be dangerous to your budget if you bring your check book along.
