Junk e-mail, or ¡®spam¡¯, is something that every internet user has come across at least once, and they are usually not happy to do so.  These useless pieces of mass-marketing are rarely something you want to read, and do little more than clutter up your mailbox.  However, if you are careful and willing to do a little bit more work, you can minimize the spam you have to see in your inbox.

The first and perhaps most obvious tip is to take advantage of any spam filters or spam blockers your e-mail service has available.  If they do not have any automatic options, but do offer custom filters, a good way to start is to block any e-mails with common spam phrases in their titles and messages, such as ¡®home mortgage¡¯ or ¡®money from home¡¯.  If you are really serious about cutting down on spam, you might consider using an e-mail service which offers an ¡®exclusive¡¯ setting, which blocks all e-mails except those on your address-book and any other domains or addresses you specify.  If you choose to go this route, it is advisable to check your junk mail folder on a regular basis, just to see if anything you might have wanted to see got placed in there by mistake.

One way spammers get e-mail addresses is through a partnership with some websites that are less than honest about what they do with your e-mail address when you register on their site.  For this reason, it is not a bad idea to have two separate e-mail accounts, one of which you mostly just use to sign up on websites whose commitment to their privacy policy you are unsure of.  That way, you can still enjoy the benefits of being a member of the site, but the spam you might receive would just be sent to an e-mail account you don¡¯t often use.

Another method used by advertisers to fill their collection of spam recipients is through programs that scan all manner of public online media, looking for any e-mail address listed, which they automatically add to their databases.  However, you can avoid getting put on these lists by exercising a little bit of prudence when sharing your address on a public message board, newsgroup, or any other form of mass communication.  Instead of telling somebody your e-mail address is ¡®myname@domain.com¡¯, you might want to tell them it is ¡®myREMOVETHISname@domainSPAMBLOCK.com¡¯ or ¡®my space name at domain dot com¡¯.  The people you want to have your e-mail address will be able to figure out what to do, but the automated collection scripts probably will not.

Finally, here is one last tip to avoid spam.  If you get an e-mail that says ¡®if you think you got this message in error, please respond to this e-mail address to unsubscribe¡¯, and you are fairly certain it is spam, do NOT respond to it.  A lot of times spammers will send out e-mails with that line to try and figure out which accounts are active and which are not.  If anything, it will probably increase the amount of spam you get, instead of lessen it.

Spam is an annoyance most everybody who uses e-mail will have to deal with, but hopefully these tips will help you make it a thing largely of the past in your life.
