Candles give your home a warm cozy feeling and can add a sweet scent to the air as they burn. Until recently, most candles were made from paraffin wax, beeswax, or tallow. Soy candle wax has emerged as a clean and inexpensive way to enjoy the benefits of candle light in your home. Soy candles have surged in popularity in recent years.
A man named Michael Richards invented soy candles in the early to mid 1990s. Most candles were made from paraffin wax but Mr. Richards was looking for a wax that was cleaner burning to use in his candles. Burning paraffin wax is known to emit the same chemicals as a running diesel engine. Mr. Richards first wanted to use beeswax, but he found it to be too expensive. He experimented with many types of vegetable oils before finding soy to be a cleaner alternative to the paraffin wax.
Soy is considered to be a great choice for candles because of its ease of use and its cost. Beeswax is also considered a natural and clean burning wax, but it can be expensive. Though paraffin wax is inexpensive, it is made of petroleum products that can be harmful. This is especially true for those who suffer from allergies or respiratory type problems. Soy is a cleaner and cheaper alternative to both of these choices.
Soy wax is produced completely from the oil of the soybean. The oil is extracted from the soybean in a simple procedure. The soybeans are crushed in a hexane solvent that extracts the oil from the bean. The oil is collected and then put through a process called hydrogenation, which changes the oil from a liquid to a solid at room temperature.
Soy candles are 100 percent biodegradable because they are made entirely from soybeans. They produce almost no soot, leaving your home cleaner. Traditional paraffin wax candles can leave dark soot on your curtains and walls, and around the rim of your candleholders. Soy wax spills clean up very easily with hot, soapy water. Soy wax that has dripped into carpet and onto upholstery can be easily cleaned, where as paraffin is likely to remain imbedded, despite your best efforts to remove it.
Another advantage of soy candles is the rate at which they burn. They have a lower melting point, so they burn more slowly. Soy candles burn fifty percent slower than paraffin wax candles. The slow burn gives a more even disbursement of fragrance. They will last longer and the aroma will be stronger and more pleasant.
For people who make candles at home, soy is very easy to use. Some soy waxes melt smoothly in the microwave. The process of adding fragrance and color is simple. One draw back of soy is that darker colors are harder to achieve. Sometimes the finished soy candles have a crusted appearance, but this is often a pleasing effect.
If you are looking for an inexpensive way to make your own candles, or find that the soot and toxins from paraffin candles bothers you, soy may be a great alternative. The Body Shop was the first national chain to offer soy-based candles to the general public. Today, soy candles can be purchased almost anywhere you shop for candles. |
