Skateboarding is a popular sport for kids and teens across the United States. One of the most fun things to do on a skateboard is to see how many tricks, spins, and jumps you can make. To do this, you'll not only need a skateboard, but you'll also need a ramp. A ramp will give you a place to get some of that air you need when you're riding high and having fun!
You can build your own skateboard ramp if you have a few materials, some basic tools, and these easy-to-follow instructions.
The first step in this project is to decide where you can place a skateboard ramp. Choose a relatively flat location where you can build a ramp and it will be out of the way. A good location could be in a back yard, in an unused parking lot, et cetera. Be sure that you check with your local building codes department first to make sure that the law allows you to build a ramp. And, if you're looking to build on a piece of land that doesn't belong to you, be sure that you get written permission from the actual owner before you build!
Next, you'll need several pressure treated wooden two by fours to start building the frame with. Basically, you'll need two- eight foot - two by fours for the bottom. Then, use a tape measure to measure in a couple feet on the front end of both two by fours. Mark them, then measure and cut some additional two by fours to make a vertical side with. These pieces should be as tall as you want your skateboard ramp to be. Use an electric saw to cut the pieces to size, then use a hammer and galvanized nails to securely hold them onto each bottom two by four.
The third step involves finishing the frame. You'll now need to measure, mark, and use an electric saw to cut a couple more two by fours. These will be secured onto the bottom pieces so many feet (depending on the size you're building your ramp) from the first vertical side. Nail these pieces onto the bottom by using galvanized wood nails.
Next, measure, mark, and cut a couple more pieces of wood. These two by fours will connect the two sides together by being nailed across their respective tops.
For the fourth step, you'll need some sheets of three fourths of an inch thick plywood. These sheets will fit over the bottom of the ramp frame. Their edge will start at the end of the frame. Each sheet will then bend to make the curve you need for your ramp. You'll connect the plywood to the frame by using a hammer and galvanized nails.
Once you lay the plywood out, you'll need to measure, mark and cut additional two by fours. You'll need approximately four or five braces. You'll need some long pieces and several shorter sidepieces. These two by fours will need to brace up the curve made by the plywood. After you use an electric sander to curve down one side on each brace, they'll fit underneath the plywood nicely. Use a hammer and additional galvanized nails to secure the braces into place.
Check your skateboard ramp for durability by walking up and down on it. Also, check for nail heads that are sticking up, rough spots, et cetera, and fix them as needed.
The final step is to paint your ramp. Use a good quality primer first, then use a paint that will hold up under any weather condition.
Have fun and enjoy!
