Every birder needs a good vest to carry all the necessary items for bird watching.   You may think that all you need to carry is a good pair of binoculars.  There are many things you should carry with you in order to enjoy your birding trip even more.  Once you really begin to learn the hobby of bird watching you will want to carry your bird watching field guide with you each time you go out.  A birding vest that has a large enough pocket for the field guide will make the vest more efficient.  Decide on which other items you want to carry with you on a birding trip, and then find a vest with enough pockets that will carry it all easily.   Good birding vests usually have around ten pockets of different sizes.   Try the vest on before you buy it.  Fill up all the pockets with all your items and see if it feels good and does not feel too heavy.  It is also important to find out if, when the vest pockets are full, the vest feels evenly distributed in weight.  

Something you may need smaller pockets for are the lens cups off of your binoculars.  If you wear glasses, you may want to remove them at times, and you will need a pocket to safely store them in.  All pockets on a birding vest should have Velcro closures for easy access.  Most birders keep some sort of a journal or at least keep notes in a notebook.  As you are observing the birds, it is a good idea to write things down before you forget them.  You will need a pen or a pencil, and a pocket for them as well.  

Most birders are avid photographers also.   If at all possible, they want to take pictures of the birds they see.  A good sized pocket, with a security closure, is a good addition to a birding vest.  Some binoculars have digital cameras built in and you will want to have a good pocket for these kinds of items.  Most birding vests have a large pocket in the back, across the bottom half, that is large enough to carry a lightweight rain jacket.   When you are birding, you won¡¯t want to quit too soon.  So, carrying a snack and something to drink is something you may want to do.  You will want to put your food in a pocket, until you are ready to eat.   A water bottle pocket is always good to have, because you can easily get dehydrated while bird watching during hot weather.  Adequate ventilation is needed in any birding vest you wear.  The color is important too and some people think that a light color, such as tan, is best.  This color will not be so hot during the summer time.  Other people like to make a fashion statement and they also don¡¯t believe that bright colors scare the birds off.  So some people prefer bright colored vests.  Still others like to be seen by any hunters that may be in their birding zone.  So the color is strictly your choice.  Like safari vests, the most popular color is still a tan or khaki color.  

Wintertime is a good time to watch birds.  Try to find a birding vest that can expand to fit over your coat. Depending on where you like to go bird watching, you may need to carry some insect repellent with you.  A small package of tissues and lens cleaner is sometimes carried if there is a problem with the lens getting dirty or if it is drizzling rain.  

Stock your birding vest with all your necessary items and hang it up beside the door.  On a moments notice you will be prepared to go out birding.  This will save you lots of time, time which you can spend birding.  Don¡¯t forget to wear a hat on hot days too.
