Snakeskin belts are currently hot fashion items, but they are not inexpensive.  Snakeskin is an expensive type of leather to start with.  It is possible, however, to sew your own snakeskin belt.  The cheapest and easiest way to do this is to start with fake snakeskin fabric, which is made of polyester coated with polyvinylchloride in a snakeskin pattern.  It should be available at any large fabric store, and retails for around $10 per yard.  A yard would be plenty to make the belt and some accessories, such as a small sized vest or a skullcap.

Belt making kits used to be widely available at the notions counter of fabric stores, but are becoming harder to find.  If you want to use one and can't locate a new one, check with a dealer in vintage sewing notions.  These kits consist of stiff backing material in a 40" length and several widths from 1 to 2 inches, a buckle, pattern to use for covering the buckle in fabric, and eyelets.  Buckles in these kits can be oval or rectangular.  These kits, which cost around $3 each, are designed to be used to create a fabric-covered belt and contain all instructions.  Using a kit with fake snakeskin fabric would be the simplest way to sew your own snakeskin belt.

If you want to use genuine snakeskin, be advised that it is not cheap!  Python bellies, which have a different scale texture than backs, are 8 inches wide and cost around $60 for 3 pounds.  A black and white cobra skin, 4" by 48", costs around $40, and a Western Diamondback Rattlesnake skin costs around $60.  A complete python skin, which would make several belts and other accessories, can be bought for around $130, and is 10 to 11 feet long by 9 inches wide at the widest spot.

Snakes used for commercially available snakeskin belts or leather are farm raised.  If you are interested in killing and tanning your own, be aware that many snakes are protected by conservation laws.  There are snakeskin-tanning kits available from leather craft and taxidermy supply stores.  Some brand names to look for include Rittel SSK-100 tanning kit, True Tan reptile and amphibian tanning kit, and Rep Tan snakeskin tanning lotion.  All of these products cost around $16 each and will tan several snakeskins.

Each of the products named above comes with complete instructions.  The process of tanning snakeskin typically consists of two steps.  After the snake is skinned, the skin is left in a solution overnight.  The next day, it is stretched and pinned flat, and a special oil is brushed on while it is drying.  The result should be a sewable leather which still has the markings.

To cut the leather, use a cutting mat, a metal ruler, and a razor knife.  Cut the leather 10 inches longer than the desired waist measurement and the same width as the desired buckle.  Cut the free end to the shape desired.  Snakeskin, especially from smaller snakes, tends to be fragile, so the belt will have to have something, such as a lining fabric or firmer leather, to stiffen it.  The snakeskin can be sewn to the lining fabric, topstitched all around the edge.  To make the belt shiny, use a layer of varnish.  This will also help to protect it.  

Buckles are available from leather craft stores.  Fold the buckle end of the belt to the underside, about 1-1/2 inches from the end.  Using a leather punch or sharp awl, make a hole in the center of the fold.  Insert the tongue of the buckle through the hole and attach the leather together underneath, using rivets or the sewing machine.  For the holes at the free end of the belt, use a leather punch.  Making sure the holes are centered, make one every inch on the last few inches of the belt.
