Cloth gift bags have become a very popular way to wrap gifts. They are beautiful, reusable, and unique. They can also be quite expensive when bought ready made. Instead of spending money on a gift bag that would be better spent on a gift, you can make your own cloth gift bags and add a personalized touch while saving money. There are many different fabrics that are appropriate for making gift bags. Below are several types of fabrics, and the benefits and practical applications of each type of fabric.

Gauze, tulle, and other sheer fabrics: Sheer fabrics offer a translucent, filmy covering that provides veiled peeks of what is inside the bag. These light, delicate fabrics are wonderful for gifts for women. The nature of the fabric is often quite feminine, and would not be appropriate for gift intended for a man.  Because of the translucent nature of shear fabrics you have to decide whether or not you want your gift to be seen through the bag. Sheers make excellent bags for gifts that are already enclosed in a pretty box or container. Sheer fabrics are delicate, and sometimes hard to sew with and require a more experiences sewer capable of sewing straight, narrow seams in order to turn out a nice finished gift bag. 

Velvet, velveteen, velour and panne: These fabrics are lustrous and rich with soft, short naps. They come in a wide range of colors, and just by the very nature of the fabric look expensive! These fabrics are easy to sew with, and have a wonderful drape and feel. They are generally quite sturdy as well! Bags made of these fabrics would be suitable for both genders, and would be most appropriate for high quality fine gifts. 

Woven or knit cotton and cotton blend prints and solids- These fabrics come in a huge array of colors and prints! Because of this wide selection bags made from these fabrics can range from fun and whimsical to elegant. Woven cottons and cotton blends are easy to sew with and sturdy. Knits are also sturdy, but the stretch of the fabric makes it a bit more challenging to sew with. Prints can be used to make the bag perfect for holidays, special events, and gifts for men, women, children and babies!

There are many other wonderful fabrics that can be made into gift bags in addition to the ones listed above. A trip to your local fabric store, chain discount store, or craft store will practically overload you with possibilities. In addition to fabric, trims such as braid, cording, fringe, beads, beaded fringe, feather trim, rickrack and more can be added to embellish the gift bag. Buttons, appliqu¨¦s and lace can also be used to decorate the gift bags. 

To make a simple draw string closing gift bag you will need enough fabric to make a bag large enough to hold your gift, and something to be used as a drawstring (cording, ribbon, twine, fine rope, etc). To determine how much fabric you will need measure the length, width and depth of your gift item. Add the width of your item to the length (this will ensure that the bag is tall enough to hold your item once it¡¯s inside it). Add 2-3 inches to your length and width measurements for seam allowances and ease in inserting and removing your gift. Simple square and rectangular shaped bags are the easiest to make. Adjust your measurements into either a square, or rectangle. Cut two pieces of fabric, right sides together the size of your measurements. Pin to keep the pieces from shifting as you sew. Sew any three sides if your bag is square, or two long and one short side if your bag is rectangular with a ?-1/2 inch seam allowance. If your fabric is sheer, or prone to fraying finish the edges of the bag with a zigzag stitch or by serging. The remaining open side of the bag will become the top opening of your gift bag. Turn the raw edge of the bag under ? of an inch to the wrong side, press and baste in place. In the center front of the bag you will create two reinforced openings (holes) for the draw strings to exit through. The openings can be reinforced by creating them like a button hole if your sewing machine automatically sews button holes, by manually creating a button hole with a satin or narrow zigzag stitch, or by using pre-bought grommets and a grommet setter. Using your chosen method center two draw string openings on the front of the bag approximately half an inch apart from each other and one inch down from the finished edge of the bag. 

Turn the finished edge of the bag down far enough to reach below your draw string openings and stitch in place to form a draw string casing. If you wish to add a decorative trim to your bag, do so now. Trim can be sewn to the top of the bag around the finished edge, or lower down on the bag below the draw string casing. Using a safety pin or tool designed for the purpose, insert your cord into one draw string opening, and pull it through the draw string casing exiting the other draw string opening. Knot the ends of your cord to prevent them from being pulled through the draw string openings.
