Have you ever gone to the store with buying drapes in mind but end up disappointed at the selection they offer? It doesn't matter what store you go to. They only have a certain style and tapestry each year when you might be looking for something a little more unique. The best way to not only get the right price but the right style is to sew them yourself.
There are several types of styles to choose from when you want to sew drapes. They range from floor length, windowsill length and possibly even just the top of the window like a valance.
Cafe curtains come are from the center of your window to the bottom of the sill. This is a very cute and ideal way to dress up your kitchen window and also lets light in but allows you the privacy away from your neighbors. You can add a valance or leave the top of the window open to allow the light to pour in. The options are endless when coming to this style of drape because you can add decorative clips to hang the drapes or you can even add beads to the bottom of the curtains. These are basically sewn just like regular draperies but at a shorter length.
When you go to buy your fabric you can buy anything from ginghams to lacy materials. Here's what to get when you go to the fabric store:
-Fabric (the amount depends on the size of your window)
-Thread (If possible pick out matching thread)
-Scissors
-Curtain rings (Once again the amount of curtain rings depend on the fabric amount)
-A Cafe rod
-Lace trim or beads (This is entirely up to you)
Here's a list of what you'll need to have to complete your project:
-Fabric Marker
-Hand sewing needles
-Machine Needles
-A seam ripper-this is used in case of a mistake
-Straight Pins
-A tape measure
-A yardstick
-Screwdriver
-An Iron
-Wall anchors
Before going to the store to get your fabrics and hardware, measure your window to be sure of exactly how much material you will need so you don't get half way through the project and realize you are short. Some people use patterns for their draperies but others do it by just visualizing it. You must decide what is best for you and what the less time consuming for you.
You must consider what type of fabric to use when considering making drapes. You can use virtually any type of fabric you would like but keep in mind that if you choose a fabric that is intended for clothing that they are less wide than home decor fabrics. Home decor fabrics run from 48 to 72 inches wide.
After you've picked up everything you need from the fabric store here is what you need to do with it to complete your project.
1. Mount the brackets for the cafe rod in the center of your window. Measure your window in the center between the top and bottom panes.
2. Measure from the top of the center of the window down to the sill to approximate how much fabric you will need for the drapes.
3. Cut your material to the measurements you established. If you¡¯ve calculated right you may not have to do much cutting at all.
4. Pin both sides of the fabric to create a hem. It should be about a half an inch when you get done pinning the sides. You can either sew them now or wait until you are finished with pinning the bottom hem.
5. Fold up the bottom half of the fabric and pin it at 1 inch.
6. Fold the corners of the bottom sides and sew both the sides and bottom hems. This is what is called a mitre. A mitre is basically a beveled edge to make two ends fit together.
7. When you create a header for the curtain you must fold the top down 1 inch. Some instructions require you to fold it down another 2 inches but since we are using curtain rings you will not need to do that.
8. Sew the top hem.
9. Take your curtain rings and sew them by hand approximately 1-2 inches apart.
10. If you've decided to add lace to your curtain or beads you must pin the lace up along the inner edge of the curtain so it is facing the opposite direction of the other curtain panel. Of course you must make sure that you are pinning them on the reverse side of the fabric.
11. If you are planning on using a decorative beading then you can pin them along the bottom of the curtain panels and then sew them to the curtains.
12. Hang your curtains on the curtain rods and enjoy.
If you are still wanting to do a valance but you don¡¯t want to sew then you can hang a curtain rod about 2 to 4 inches above the top edge of the window frame and add either a lacy material or various nick knacks to the top curtain rod. You can add the lacy material by wrapping it loosely around the top rod and let the ends of the fabric drape down by the cafe curtains. You could also find items that would match your kitchen theme. For instance, if you are doing a farm theme, then you can find light knick-knacks and string them up on the top curtain rod or you can even take antique kitchen utensils and hang them as well. The idea is to have fun with your creation and save yourself money in the long run.
Making curtains can be a fun and creative time to make a statement with your creation. It is much more rewarding to make something that will compliment your home when you can't find anything in the store to match what you'd like to buy.
