Poker is a card game that is played at casinos, at private clubs, online, and in homes. Seven card stud is just one of the many varieties of poker. It's played with two to eight players. There are no wild cards, so a five card combination of the highest cards - ace, king, queen, usually wins the pot.    

To start the game, each player puts an ante into the pot. The ante is a predetermined amount that starts the game. It can be as low as a dollar, but as high as several dollars. 

Then, the dealer gives each player two cards that are dealt face down, and one card that is dealt face up. The player with the highest card showing starts the round of betting. He or she either places a monetary bet or says, "Check". Check doesn't involve any betting but it keeps the player in the game for that hand. 

Each player looks at their cards, and follows in turn. If the player who started the round says "Check", then, judging on the strength of their hands thus far, each player may check too. But, if the beginning player has opened and placed a bet, then, to stay in the hand, the others must "Call". To call a bet, each player must place the required monetary amount into the pot. Or, if a player has decided they have a losing hand, they can say "Fold" and drop out of the hand.     

Next, the dealer gives each player one card that is face up. The player with the highest card showing 

again starts the round of betting. After that round is complete, the dealer gives out the fifth card face up. Another round of betting happens, and then the dealer gives each player their sixth cards which are dealt face up. After another round of betting, the seventh, or final playing card is dealt face down.  

Now that each player who has stayed in the hand has their seven cards, a final round of betting takes place. After that, it's time for the poker showdown. The showdown is the time when everyone exposes their hands. 

A winning poker hand is made up of five cards. The five cards must have one of these combinations:

(from lowest to highest)

Pair - Two of the same cards, such as two aces, two sevens, two fours, et cetera. 

Two pairs - Two pairs of the same cards

Three of a Kind - Three of the same cards, such as three jacks, three nines, et cetera. 

Straight - Five cards of any of the four suits that run in numerical order. Example, three, four, five, six, and seven. 

Flush - Any five cards of the same suit. 

Full house - Three of a kind plus a pair of cards.

Four of a Kind - Four of any of the same cards, such as four eights, four deuces, et cetera. 

Straight flush - Five cards of the same suit that make a lower straight. Example, three, four, five, six and seven of diamonds. 

Royal Straight Flush - The ace, king, queen, jack and ten of the same suit.  

To be able to win the most at seven card stud, you need to have a strategy in place. The most important strategy you can use is to not show your emotions. Have you ever heard of the term,

"Poker face"? A person who is wearing a poker face shows no emotions. That way, their opponents won't be able to tell if they have a winning hand or not. 

Here's another tip: human nature will make you want to bid heavily on a good hand. This will often scare the other players and make them fold their hands. You'll probably win the pot, but it probably won't be worth much.  

But if you bet light at the beginning of the hand and keep betting like that until the seventh card is dealt, you'll probably keep more players in the hand. This will increase the amount of the pot and it could win you even more!

Finally, whether you have a good poker hand or not, you always have the option to bluff. When you bluff, you bet heavily on a losing hand. What's the point of that, you may ask? Bluffing can often scare your opponents so they fold and you end up with the pot by default. Because of human nature, it's a strategy that often works!
