You can purchase a top of the line bicycle, the best tires, and all the right gear; but if you haven¡¯t purchased a good pair of bike shorts, you may as well forget about having an enjoyable biking experience. After all, nothing else matters when you¡¯re uncomfortable. Read on to learn how to pick out the best padded bike shorts, so that you¡¯re guaranteed the very best ride possible.
Padding- When shopping for a pair of padded bike shorts, padding is by far the most important consideration. A well-padded pair of shorts will protect you from road jarring, and help to fend off some of the saddle soreness that goes along with longer rides. While many people are tempted to go with the most padded shorts available, this isn¡¯t necessarily the best approach, since heavily padded shorts have a tendency to feel bulky and diaper-like; and generally do not breathe as well as less padded shorts.
Breathe-ability- Another important feature of any good pair of bike shorts is their ability to breathe. Often referred to as ¡°wicking,¡± it¡¯s the feature that will ensure you and your shorts stay dry during a ride. This feature is particularly important on long rides where long-term dampness is likely to contribute to saddle soreness.
The wicking ability of a pair of shorts will greatly depend on whether they have gel or chamois padding. The basic difference between the two is that chamois padding wicks better, while gel padding provides more cushioning. Preference for one type of padding over the other certainly varies from one bicyclist to the next, and you may need to try out both types of padding to determine which is best suited to your needs.
Fit- For a comfortable ride, you¡¯ll want to make sure your shorts fit snuggly. Virtually all padded bike shorts contain Lycra, which helps to keep the shorts from moving around during a ride, but this is far from the only component of a good fitting pair of shorts.
The number of panels present in the garment will also determine fit. Essentially, the more panels a pair of shorts has, the better the fit will be. To get a good fit at a reasonable cost, look for a pair that contains at least six panels. (You can find shorts with more panels, but expect to pay more for those.)
Style- While comfort is probably the first consideration when choosing a pair of padded bike shorts, style is likely to be a secondary consideration. The most common style of bike shorts is, of course, the long, black, tight-fitting short; however, in recent years, many companies have started to pay more attention to style, and now offer padded bike shorts in a variety of new colors. Perhaps even more exciting, is the emergence of padded bike shorts that look more like surfer shorts. These are especially nice if you feel self-conscious parading around town in a tight pair of shorts.
Spend a little time picking the best padded bike shorts for you, and you¡¯re sure to have a ride worth remembering. |
