The game billiards has been a pastime enjoyed by people all over the world for over six-hundred years.  Believed to have originated in France in the mid 1500's, billiards was originally played outdoors on a lawn, and was very similar to the croquet which is still played to this day.  The balls were struck from an upright position with a type of mace, also called a billet, which is where the term billiards originates from.  The status of people who have enjoyed billiards ranges from the ranks of European nobility to the commoner, and even had a passing reference in Shakespeare¡¯s Antony and Cleopatra.  

Since its inception, many technological and engineering advancements have been introduced to billiards.  Billiard tables have gone through mass production and hundreds of different types of materials have been used for the familiar green playing field.  The balls used in billiards have also undergone several radical advancements in size, style of denotation, and composite material.  Billiard cues, or pool sticks, have been subjected to a never ending stream of changes that include, but are not limited to, variations in size, design engineering, weight, composition, length, and appearance.  Billiard cues are custom designed and mass produced by the thousands every day.  The most radical evolution in the technological advancement of the Billiard cue has been the addition of laser sights.  

The laser cue, while wildly innovative, is actually quite simple in design.  A small, relatively safe, laser pointer is set within a cue on a plane that is both collinear, and parallel to the natural center of the cue stick.  Laser cross-hairs are emitted from the end of the cue through a tiny hole in the center of the tip, allowing players to accurately align shots, measure distances, and confirm angles.  

The accuracy of the cross-hairs, from the laser cue, allows a player to see the precise spot at which the tip of the cue stick will strike the cue ball.  Targeting the laser sight high or low on the cue ball, then striking with an appropriate level of force, causes the ball to over-rotate either to the forward or the rear, effecting an inordinate length of travel or even a sudden stop of the cue ball upon striking the target ball.  This technique is what Americans refer to as English.  The English themselves refer to this technique as Sides.

The laser cue also allows a player to see any excessive movement in their shot technique.  By concentrating on the laser sight during  the retreat of the cue stick from the cue ball, the strike of the cue stick itself, and the follow through, a player can gauge the amount of sloppiness in his stroke.  Concentrating on this aspect of the shot repetitiously is a sure way to add a greater measure of consistency to a player¡¯s overall game.  

While the laser cue can be valued training aid, it is not without its safety precautions.  Lasers, because of their extremely intense electromagnetic radiation, come with their own intrinsic dangers.  The energy emitted from the laser, when passing through the lens of the human eye, is focused onto the retina in much the same way light from the sun is focused through a magnifying glass.  Avoid targeting the laser sight into anyone¡¯s eyes.  Switch the laser off in between shots in order to preserve power, avoid accidentally targeting someone¡¯s face, and keep the laser cue out of the reach of children.  It is certainly not a toy.
