Brag books are typically about 5X6 inches, so one picture on a page will suffice. Any more and the page will be too cluttered. Of course, all the typical scrapbooking rules for purchasing acid and lignin free albums and materials apply to a brag book. If you want your photos to remain safe for generations to enjoy, all paper, glue, adhesives and embellishments touching the photos should be archival safe, or, if not, sprayed with an acid neutralizing spray. 

When creating a brag book, always start with a theme. Think of a brag book as a small, personal story book told with pictures. There are many possibilities for themes, from very general (Grandma's Girls) to the very specific (Johnny's First Hair Cut). Once you've settled on your theme, begin selecting photographs that capture it. The photos do not have to be taken on the same day, or time, or on the same roll of film; but they do have to work together in telling that story. For example, in a "Johnny's First Hair Cut" brag book, most pictures will probably revolve around the actual cut, with before and after shots taken either on or very close to the day of the cut in order to show the difference. However, a  "Grandma's Girls" brag book can have pictures collected over years or decades from different occasions, locations, and even different families-- as long as all the pictures focus on the granddaughters.

Now that you've chosen your theme and selected your photographs, it is time to go to the craft store (or dig into your scrapbooking supplies). Start by finding colors that coordinate with your photographs and flatter the subjects. For a brag book, much in the same way the theme should be unified, so should the colors. Decide first if the mood of the theme calls for bright, bold primaries, soft pastels, soothing earth-tones, or rich jewel tones or classic black and white. Make your choices from the group that plays up the theme best. For example, bold reds and yellows may work well for a kid¡¯s birthday party, but wouldn't be so good for a formal wedding, which would probably be best displayed on a background of classy black and white. 

If one single color doesn't work for all the photographs-- fear not. You don't have to use the same main color for every page (though you certainly can). You can always choose a combination of 3 colors that work well together and with the photos. Then, for each page, choose one of the colors to be the main color and the others to be the accents. This keeps the unity throughout the book while giving you a variety.

After choosing colors, consider which embellishments can be used to further tie the story together. Using the stickers, die cuts, paper punches or rubber stamps throughout the book help to further unify the pages and strengthen the theme. Sometimes, in craft stores or online, you'll find plenty of theme embellishments that can be incorporated throughout your brag book. Other times, with more general themes, you should choose a few and use them repeatedly through the book. Going back to our original examples, for "Johnny's First Hair Cut," you could probably find die cuts, stickers, rubber stamps, or a variety of other embellishments depicting things such as barber shop poles, barber chairs, shampoo bottles, scissors, clippers, and mirrors so that you could put a different one on each page to further the story along. For "Grandma's Girls," a broader theme, you may wish to repeatedly use the same embellishments (hearts, bows, flowers, etc.) on every page to tie them all together.

Mementos other than photos make a nice addition to a page, if you can come by them.  Going back to our examples, you might consider placing a clipping of Johnny's hair on the last page of his brag book. For Grandma's girls, it might be a little more challenging.  Perhaps you can find some of the hair ribbons she always seemed to have in her pocket to tie pigtails with, or a favorite cookie recipe that she always made when her girls were visiting. Sometimes, items that weren't personal but still related to the theme can be included in a brag book as an interesting addition. For example, if you're doing a brag book about your garden, try adding some seed packets or pressed flowers. Even if they weren't the exact ones from your own garden, they'll still add to the mood and visual impact of the book.   

Journaling always adds a special touch to any scrapbook, and brag books are no exception. Consider putting photos on one page, with a journaling entry on the opposite facing page depicting the thoughts, events or memories revolving around the photo. Use the journaling to tell the story, making a brag book more than just a collection of photos, but as a personalized picture book. Another option is finding a quote, saying, or small poem that relates to each page and writing it in.

Celebrating a particular person or group of people (baby's first year, three generations of the Robinson family, the gang at Tony's Pizza Place)

Depicting special days or events (a trip to Tahiti, Susan's 40th birthday party, 10 Christmas mornings with the Johnsons),

honoring a lost loved one (in memory of Uncle Bob, RIP Scruffy the Wonder Dog, Great Grandma's life in Poland),

To keep the memories of ordinary days or things we loved alive (family pizza night, our busy mornings, Grandpa¡¯s stamp collection)

Or showing a special relationship or bond (best friends forever, sisters, eternal love)
