Roulette is one of the more social gambling games you will find at a casino. While slot machines are a rather solitary pursuit and Texas Hold ¡®em a rather serious and competitive game, roulette is for the player who just wants to have a little fun and be friendly at a gambling table.

There are two types of roulette wheels; European and American. The European wheel has the numbers 0 through 36 while the American wheel has an additional 00 slot. This additional slot gives the house a greater advantage so it is best to play on a European wheel when you have the choice.  Even so, remember that the house always has the advantage so if you find yourself winning, walk away soon before the house takes back it¡¯s winnings.

The numbers on the wheel may appear to be placed quite randomly, but they are not. The numbers are arranged so that the odds of landing on a high or low number or an odd or even number are evenly distributed.

Table Etiquette:

Before you begin betting it is good to know the etiquette of the game so that you do not unintentionally offend the more experienced players, or worse yet, get kicked out of the casino.  

Usually the dealer will give players about 60 seconds between games to place their bets.  Once the wheel is spinning you will still have a few seconds to continue to place your bet.  However, once the dealer says ¡°No more bets¡± you must stop placing your chips on the table.

Remember to be polite to the dealer and other players. This means no arguing and do not get too rowdy.  Enthusiasm is one thing, shouting in another player¡¯s ear is another.

Once the ball has dropped into the slot, the dealer will place a marker on the table corresponding to the slot where the ball dropped.  The dealer will then remove all losing bets and will pay off the winners.  Do not touch your chips during any of this process.  

Each table will have set betting minimum. Make sure you are at a table where you feel comfortable with the stakes.

About every tenth spin it is good form to give the dealer a tip.  

How to Play:

Roulette tables use their own chips. Each player is given his or her own color of chips so that the dealer can differentiate between players. The individual dealer determines the value of the chips.  A dealer may place a ¡°lammer¡± on top of a stack of chips indicating the value of that stack.

There are two basic types of bets: inside bets and outside bets. An inside bet is one placed on the main grid of numbers.  An outside bet is placed on one of the betting choices on the outside edge of the table.  

Within the category of inside bets there are 5 different types of bets: 

1) The  Straight Bet. This entails guessing on one particular number.  The odds of wining on a straight bet are pretty poor. While the payoff is high, the odds of winning are 35 to 1.

2) The Split Bet. This is guessing that one of two numbers will win. You indicate you want a split bet by placing a chip on the line that separates two numbers. The odds of wining a split bet are 17 to 1.

3) The Street or Stream Bet. This is betting that one of three numbers will win. The odds of this occurring are 11 to 1.

4) Square or four-number bet. Again this is guessing that any one of four numbers will win.  The odds of winning this are 8 to 1. 

5) Five-number bet. This is only played on an American Wheel and it is only for numbers 00, 0, 1, 2 and 3.

The odds of winning this type of bet are 6 to 1.

An outside bet is one in which chips are placed on the betting choices on the outside portion of the table. You can chose to bet if the number will be high (between 19 and 36) or low (between 1 and 18) or if it will be black or red or odd or even. The odds of all these outside bets are the same: one to one.  The pay off is two to one.  This means if you are correct on a ten-dollar bet you will get your original ten back plus an additional ten dollars.

Another type of outside bet is the dozen bet. This means you are guessing one of a particular dozen coming up.  You can bet on the numbers 1-12, 13-24 and 25 ¨C36.  The payoff for this is also 2 to 1.

A column bet also has the same pay off as the other types of outside bets. In a column bet you are betting that the number will fall in either the top, middle or bottom column.
