Years ago, we put together a small shed in our backyard to store all the little extras that we just did not have room for in our basement: the lawnmower, rakes, shovels, even bags of potting soil. While not overly large, about eight by ten feet, it served its purpose well over the years. Then last year we realized that like many objects in our yard, it was looking its age. Made of tin, it had started to rust in our northern area where snow would cover it often from November all the way through the sun filled days of April. 

Instead of purchasing another tin shed, we decided to go with a vinyl-constructed adaptation for several reasons. One, with vinyl sheds naturally non-rusting, rot and mildew free, fire retardant and never requiring painting due to their fade free surfaces, we figured the vinyl would last years longer than a wood or tin shed would in the coming years against the damaging snows and rain that frequent our area. And two, we hoped it would be cooler in the summer months than the tin one, which always seemed to reach an average well into the hundreds in its interior even on days when there was only a moderate amount of sun. In addition, with a vinyl shed, adding windows is not only possible it is relatively easy with a window kit made for the shed of your choosing and a few additional tools such as a jig saw and drill.

If you choose to construct a vinyl storage shed, a few tips and ideas will help your shed assemble easily and last for many years to come.

- Even a vinyl shed is considered a building by many municipalities, so check if any building permits or other codes must be adhered to, before you start construction.

- Ready the area where the shed will be situated before you start assembly. Level the ground and if a floor or foundation separate from the shed is to be installed, finish it first. Many vinyl sheds require a separate floor to be installed prior to assembly of the shed itself. 

- Many sheds also require anchoring of some type, either to a separate floor or to the ground itself. Unless you want to watch your shed blow away during the next windstorm, heed these directions carefully.

- Do not try to assemble the shed in one place and then move it to where you intend it to be situated. Even a smaller vinyl shed will be heavy and bulky upon construction. Moving it after assembly may cause the vinyl to crack or break.

- Use the tools, if any, that the instructions specify. Many of the vinyl sheds on the market assemble with no tools or just the basics, such as a rubber head hammer and screwdriver. Do not substitute. Vinyl is not forgiving. Do not cut something to make it fit. If you are having a hard time assembling it, chances are you missed a step or have the wrong piece for the current step at hand.

A vinyl shed that is properly assembled and installed will look good in your yard for years to come, and will also protect any gear you store in it, keeping it both dry and protected from the damaging sun and other weather hazards.
