An old Bible is often a valued family treasure. Passed down from generation to generation, a Bible can tell more than just the story of Christianity; it can tell the story of a family. By opening up the pages of an old family Bible, a reader can learn about his family¡¯s religious heritage, genealogy information such as the births, baptisms, marriages and deaths of those who came before him, and a world of other information of great interest.

1. Temperature and humidity. Your old Bible (along with any other books of value to you) should be kept in a cool dry place. Fluctuating temperatures and levels of humidity can cause swelling and contracting of the book. Over time this will warp your old Bible. For this reason it is unwise to store your Bible in the basement because basements tend to be very humid. Attics also are not ideal places for your Bible because they tend to be very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter. The regular living space of your house is the best place to keep the Bible.

2. Good air circulation. This is key to keeping your Bible in good condition. A lack of air flow can speed up decay and turn the pages brown.

3. Sunlight. Your Bible should be kept out of direct sunlight. Sunlight will fade the binding and covers of any book.

4. Placement of Bible. The best way to place a book is upright, with no leaning. It should be placed on a bookshelf snuggly, but not too tight. Any leaning the Bible might do could damage the binding. If the Bible is jammed in tightly with other books, you run the risk of damaging it or the surrounding books when you take it off the shelf. 

An exception to this would be if the Bible were very large. Very large books need lie horizontally, not vertically.

5. Keep the book away from food and drink.

6. Wash your hands before handling the Bible. Dirt and oils on your hands can damage the book. 

7. Consider having a custom made slipcase made for your Bible. 

8. Do not use the Bible as your everyday reading Bible. Regular use causes damage. Use another copy of the Bible to read from, saving your old Bible for special occasions.

9. Leather bindings. Many old Bibles are bound in leather. In the past, leather books were oiled just like many other leather items. It has been found that oiling the books did nothing to preserve them, and sometimes did damage. The oil can seep through the thin spine and damage the pages. The best way to preserve a leather-bound Bible is to simply care for it the way you would all other valuable books.

These suggestions will help preserve your family Bible for future generations to enjoy, but what if the Bible is already damaged. Here are a few suggestions:

1. Consider removing anything that has been inserted into the Bible. One of the things that can make a family Bible so interesting is the insertion of newspaper clippings, church bulletins, photos, and other mementos that have been added over the years. Unfortunately, these important keepsakes can be very damaging to the pages and binding of your old Bible. The acid from these items can discolor the pages and eat away at them. The extra thickness caused by these items can damage the binding.

You need to decide if keeping them in the Bible is worth the damage that they have done and will continue to do. An alternative to keeping them in the Bible is to create an archival quality memory book (scrapbook) for these items. Not only will this help preserve the Bible, it will preserve the mementos as well.

2. Do not attempt to repair the damage yourself. Get an expert to repair it. Taping the pages or the binding will only cause worse damage down the line. There are many places that specialize in restoring old books, and a few that even specialize specifically in Bibles. Do a little research.

3. Many Bibles have a place in the front where you can record family history. You can¡¯t do anything about what kind of ink has been used to write in it in the past, but you can make sure that if you add to the history, you use an archival quality pen. They can easily be found at any craft store. 

4. Once your Bible has been restored to your satisfaction, make sure you follow the above guidelines to care for the Bible.

Keeping your old Bible well cared for ensures that future generations will be able to enjoy a piece of your family history and religious heritage. That is well worth the time and the effort it will take to preserve this holy book.
