Whether you rent a house with other college students or you¡¯re a family with several children, finding space in today¡¯s garage can become next to impossible.  In most garages it is not uncommon to find two cars, garbage cans, lawn maintenance equipment, toys, tools, motorcycles, you name it, it¡¯s in there.  Maintaining an orderly garage limits the possibility of someone getting hurt, loosing items, and in our situation, provides for better accessibility to our bikes that we may otherwise not use if it¡¯s ¡°to much work¡± to get to.  With the right garage bicycle rack, you can gain anywhere from 20 - 40% more floor space that you didn¡¯t have before. 

There are several things you will have to take into consideration when you shop for the bicycle rack that will best meet your needs, for example what type of wall support, available space, and ceiling height will determine whether you need a freestanding or wall mount rack design.  The number of bikes you wish to store, the frame designs, tire size, and if you need security locking systems will all need to be looked at prior to the purchase of a new bicycle rack system.  Once you have taken these things into consideration your next step is the purchase and that can take place through the internet, your local bike retailer or outdoor supply shop. The two most common types of bike racks on the market are the ¡°Free Standing¡± and ¡°Wall-Mounted¡± designs.  

FREE STANDING 

The Free Standing design is usually used when minimal wall space is available.  This bike rack will hold generally two bikes in a compact space.  College students renting a house or military personnel who move often will enjoy the flexibility it affords due to its freestanding design.  The Free Standing bicycle rack can be set up in around ten minutes.  No permanent installation is required and in most cases no bolts or screws are used so minimal tools are needed if at all.   Because not all garages are level, units like this will often come with an independent adjustment arm and then some sort of optional mounting bolt to securely attach it to a wall if desired.  Security measures for the bike are left to the cyclist and their preference which may include a U-lock, cable, or chain. 

WALL - MOUNTED 

Wall-mounted designs are most often used when a permanent solution is sought after and there is no anticipation of moving in the near future.  In most cases these designs come fully assembled but require the use of a stud finder (to locate studs that will give you the strength and support needed for the wall mounted bicycle rack), level (for a professional aesthetic appearance), tape measure (to assure the holes in the rack line up with those you drilled into the wall), hand drills and or screwdrivers to fasten the unit to the wall.  While this design takes a considerable amount of time to install (around 1 hour not including the time it takes to clear the area you will be placing the bicycle rack) they do offer additional amenities not common to the Free Standing version.  Wall mounted bicycle racks often come with some sort of additional shelving to allow storage of bicycle shoes, helmet, gloves, and other riding accessories.  This design, while it does not usually come with its own locking mechanism, is compatible with cable locks to prevent theft.

Most garage bicycle racks are designed to be easily installed by the purchaser, and include a full set of instructions and any additional hardware that is required.  Bike racks weigh anywhere from 6 - 20 lbs and come with an epoxy powder coated finish in either black or gray that will endure years of heavy use.  In most cases a lifetime manufacturer¡¯s warranty is included with the purchase as an additional incentive.  Bike racks often only require minimal effort to park bicycles so the benefits of central location as well as ease of access, and additional space provided by the newly installed garage bicycle rack far outweighs any alternative.
