Replacement batteries are an ongoing expense, and they are necessary for a variety of items most people use on a daily basis. Proper storage is the key to extending the life of your unused batteries. Some say the life of batteries will be extended if they are stored in the freezer or refrigerator. This is true for some types of batteries, but not for all. Ni-cad and NiMH batteries that aren¡¯t kept in a battery charger lose their charge after only a few days in storage. If they are stored in the freezer they will retain all but 10% of their charge. Keep in mind that all batteries must be dry and at room temperature before attempting to use them.

Alkaline batteries kept in storage generally retain all but 10% of their power. If the same batteries are stored in the freezer or refrigerator they retain all but 5% of their original strength. The warmer the location of storage, the faster the batteries will lose their power. Alkaline battery manufacturers recommend storing batteries in a cool dry location for maximum shelf life, and they do not recommend storing them in the refrigerator or freezer. If batteries are properly stored they will remain good from 5 to 7 years. 

When batteries are left in items not being used there is an electrical charge still present. Over a period of time, corrosion can occur and batteries can begin leaking. The acid leaking from batteries can cause serious burns to skin and ruin other items. Battery acid should be thoroughly rinsed from skin or other items as quickly as possible to avoid injury or damage. To remove dried battery fluid from electrical contacts, gently scrub them with baking soda and an old toothbrush. Be sure to brush away all of the baking soda as well as the dried battery acid. Coat the clean contacts with a thin layer of petroleum jelly, and use a clean dry rag to wipe off any excess. The item should work properly when fresh batteries are installed. To prevent this from happening in the future, never store batteries in the products they are intended for. Store them properly as instructed above, or dispose of them in a receptacle designed especially for used batteries.  

Ni-cad batteries can be recharged approximately 1,000 times before they start to lose their capability to accept a full charge. Every year they will lose approximately 10% of their charging capability no matter how often they are used. These types of batteries develop a ¡°memory¡±. This happens if they are not allowed to fully discharge before recharging them. If they are continually only halfway discharged when placed on the charger, they will start to discharge prematurely. If you plan on storing this type of battery for a long period of time, be sure it¡¯s fully discharged first. 

Items such as cameras and camcorders can drain batteries rather quickly. This is because they have date and time functions that are always on. If you plan on storing a camera or camcorder for an extended length of time, be sure to remove the batteries first. Store the batteries properly and you won¡¯t have to replace them when you¡¯re ready to use the items again. 

Inexpensive battery racks are available that help keep batteries neatly organized. Mixing fully charged batteries with partially drained batteries is not recommended. Some battery racks have built-in battery testers so you can be sure you¡¯re using batteries containing an equal charge. These are very handy tools to have in the home or office. You can test batteries before using them to ensure the best possible performance from your battery operated devices.
