When you tell somebody who doesn*t play poker that you are about to go play poker, or just finished playing poker all night, they probably won*t ask you about the specifics. But if you tell a poker player you*re playing poker, a slew of questions are likely to come at you 每 what are the stakes? How many people are playing? Where is it at? Can I play? And perhaps most importantly, what game is being played? The answer to the last of these questions really determines the pace of a poker game, and can cause a player to decide whether or not he wants to play.
There is a staggering variety of poker games available to play, with more being created all the time 每 especially if you consider the games that don*t actually fall under normal poker rules, but are still generally referred to as poker games. However, the majority of poker playing that is done in the world is limited to the different varieties of three major categories of games.
The first of these is Draw poker, and up until recently, it was possibly the most well-known of the main game types among young kids playing for play money, and amateurs playing nickel-and-dime games. Draw poker is probably the most straightforward and easiest to understand game, so long as you have a good grasp of the ranking of poker hands. Each player in a game of Draw poker is dealt five cards face-down, and after they players have a chance to look at their hands, a round of betting occurs. After the betting, any player who hasn*t folded has the option of discarding any number of their cards and re-drawing new cards from the deck. Sometimes the game is played where you can never re-draw all five cards, and can only draw four if you have an Ace in your hand, but those can be changed or determined before the game starts. Also the players have to decide how many draws there will be 每 either one draw, or Triple Draw, or sometimes two draws. Regardless of how many draws there are, there will always be a round of betting after each one, following which the players still in the hand will either draw again, or showdown for the pot if the last draw round has already happened.
Draw poker obviously presents a few unique points 每 first of all, it is really the only type of poker that is commonly played where you are unable to see any of the other players* cards. So it involves going by the strength of your own hand and playing the opponent somewhat more than other games, because the other players really could be holding any five cards except the ones you have, so you can never be sure if they*re holding trash 每 or sitting on top of a Royal Flush.
The most popular variation of poker being played these days is without a doubt, Holdem. Specifically, the game which has dominated the tables in recent years, thanks to the televising of the World Series of Poker is Texas Holdem. In Holdem, each player is dealt a certain number of face-down hold cards, based on which Holdem variation is being played. The two most common are Texas Holdem and Omaha, which give players two and four hold cards respectively. After players are dealt their down cards, the players have to decide if they are going to play the hand and see more cards, or if they are going to fold. Assuming there is still more than one player in the hand, three cards are dealt face-up in the middle of the table, cards which can be used by any player 每 these community cards are called the ※board§ usually, and the first three that are dealt at once is referred to as ※the flop§. After the flop is dealt, another round of betting ensues. Then another community card (※the turn§) is dealt, and more betting, followed by the fifth and last up card, most commonly called ※the river§. After all five board cards are out there, players now know exactly what their final hand is. In Texas Holdem, a player can use any combination of their two hold and the five board cards they choose. Omaha, however, requires a player to use exactly two of their four hold cards to make a hand. The last round of betting occurs after the river is dealt, and there is a showdown for the pot between all who are still in the hand.
In Holdem, or at least in Texas Holdem, you often have a pretty good idea of what kind of a hand a player could conceivably have, though that still doesn*t tell you if they actually have that monster hand that can beat you or not. The use of community cards obviously gives the game an interesting dynamic that most poker players find to be very appealing and more skill-dependant than other forms of poker, which is why it is now the game of choice for most major tournaments.
The last of the three major variants is Stud poker, the main game of which is Seven-Card Stud. In Stud poker, each player is dealt a certain amount of cards which is all they have to make their hand 每 there is no community and there are no draws. Seven-Card Stud specifically starts with two cards dealt face-down followed by one card dealt face-up for each player. These three cards precede the first round of betting, and then each player*s next card is dealt face-up. More betting occurs, and then another face-up card gets dealt. This pattern repeats itself once more, meaning cards 3-6 are dealt face-up for each player. The final card is dealt face down, and after the last round of betting, a showdown of each player*s best five-card hand determines who wins the pot.
Stud poker generally allows you have fathom a vague idea at a player*s hand, since you know four of their cards 每 but keep in mind, there are still three hidden cards, which is enough to turn trash into a Full House. Stud games are slower than Holdem games, mostly due to the extra cards being dealt, though they can still be very exciting and interesting to watch.
There are always more things to consider about a poker game, such as the limits and the buy-ins, and what specific type of Holdem or Stud is being played, but knowing how to play these basic games is enough to at least get a poker novice*s feet wet. And more often than not, get their wallet a little thinner. |
