Poker is not an easy game to master, but it¡¯s easy enough to learn the basics. There are many variations, but all poker games are based on a five-card hand. The object is to get a favorable combination of five cards. Favorable combinations are as follows (in order from best to worst):

Royal Flush: A Royal Flush is the highest winning hand. When all five cards are of the same suit, with sequential values, starting with a 10 and going up to the Ace.

Straight Flush: You have a straight flush when all five of your cards are of the same suit, with sequential values. If the sequential value has an Ace as the highest card, you have a Royal Flush (see above).

Four of a Kind: This is pretty self-explanatory. When you have four cards of the same value, you have Four of a Kind.

Full House: A Full House is achieved when you have One Pair and Three of a Kind. For example, if you have a pair of 5s and three Jacks, you have a Full House.

Flush: A Flush is a hand in which all five of your cards are of the same suit. If the values are sequential, you have a Straight Flush, or if the values are sequential and you have an Ace as the highest card, you have a Royal Flush (see above).

Straight: If the values of your cards are sequential, you have a Straight. If the values are sequential and all the cards are the same suit, you have a Straight Flush (see above).

Three of a Kind: Three of a Kind is a hand in which you have three cards with the same value.

Two Pair: If you have two sets of cards with the same values, for example two Jacks and two Kings, you have Two Pair. 

One Pair: You have One Pair if you have two cards with matching values, for example two Aces.

Highest Card: If nobody has any of the above combinations, the winner of the hand is the person with the highest single card. Since Aces are generally either the high or low card, an Ace is usually the highest card a player can have.

Depending on the type of poker you¡¯re playing, bets are placed at various points during the game. Prior to any cards being dealt, some money is usually put into the pot to get things started. Sometimes, this is done with an ¡°ante.¡± An ante is a small amount of money put in by each player. Other times, a ¡°blind¡± is used to get things started. If there is a ¡°blind,¡± two players will put in a determined amount of money before the hand. Unlike an ante, the blind counts towards these players¡¯ first bet.

Betting usually begins with the person to the dealer¡¯s left, and any player can ¡°raise¡± the bet on his or her turn. A players will raise if he is especially confident in his hand or if he wants to ¡°bluff¡± the other players into believing that he has a good hand. During betting, if the stakes get too high, a player can ¡°fold,¡± losing any money from previous bets, but exempting him from further betting. 

In basic Five Card Draw, players ante before the cards are dealt. The dealer then gives each player five cards, and they all bet again. At this point, each player is given the opportunity to discard up to three cards. The dealer will replace the discarded cards with new cards from the deck. A final bet is placed before the players reveal their hands.

In Texas Holdem poker, a popular poker variation, usually uses a blind to get started. Players are each dealt two cards face down and the first round of betting begins. The dealer then deals three cards, face up in the middle of the table. These cards are called ¡°The Flop,¡± and they are community cards than any of the players can use in constructing a hand. At this time, another round of betting occurs before the dealer deals another card face up in the middle of the table. This card is called ¡°The Turn,¡± and it is also a community card. There is a third round of betting before the dealer deals the last card, called ¡°The River¡± face up in the middle of the table. After a final round of betting, players show their hands, turning their two initial cards face up. The player who can construct the best hand from the combination of community cards and face down cards wins the pot.
