Yahtzee is one of the most popular games in America.   More than 50 million Yahtzee games are sold annually and an estimated 100 million people play the game on a regular basis.  1996 marked its 40th anniversary.  A short-lived television game show adaptation of the game was even syndicated to local stations in 1987.  It is very similar to the traditional Puerto Rican game Generala that is played with five dice and categories like poker hands and triples or quads.

The history of Yahtzee is traced back to a wealthy anonymous Canadian couple that invented what they called “The Yacht Game” in 1954.  They regularly played the dice game with friends who joined them on their yacht.  The comrades of the couple enjoyed “The Yacht Game” so much that they requested copies for their own use.

The couple approached toy and game entrepreneur Edwin S. Lowe with a request for several reproductions of the game for their friends.  Lowe was so impressed with the game that he offered to buy the rights to the game.  The couple and the businessman eventually struck a deal to exchange the rights to “The Yacht Game” for 1,000 gift sets.  Lowe eventually changed the name of the game to Yahtzee.

Lowe didn’t achieve immediate commercial success with the offering of Yahtzee to the general public.  Marketing of the game was a challenge due to the difficulty in effectively conveying through advertising the game’s appeal.  The creative entrepreneur wisely resorted to organizing Yahtzee parties to promote the game.  Word of mouth advertising led to the acceptance and popularization of the game that is so widely sold and played today.  The Milton Bradley Company acquired the E. S. Lowe Company, and Yahtzee in 1973. Hasbro currently owns Milton Bradley.

Yahtzee can be played independently or with a group of players.  The challenge of solitaire play is to improve upon your score in a series of games.  This fast-moving game can accommodate a large number of players for group play.  The game is suitable for kids with the ability to add and strategize.  The adding component of Yahtzee can actually be a fun way for youngsters to sharpen their math skills.

The object of the game is to use the dice cup provided to roll 5 dice for scoring combinations.  Each player is provided with a score pad that is divided into an upper and a lower section.  The upper section is composed of number categories such as aces, twos, three, etc.  Players add up the sum of the value of the dice and score within the number categories.  There is also a bonus space available in this section.   If the total sum of aces, twos, threes, etc. adds up to 63, a 35 point bonus is awarded.  The lower section of the score pad includes poker-like combinations such as full house, three of a kind, large straight, etc.  There is also a space for Chance that is simply the total of any five dice.   The space called Yahtzee requires a player to roll five of a kind.  This is one of the most difficult combinations to achieve in a game.  Each additional Yahtzee is awarded a bonus chip and a score of 100 points.  Every player is given three opportunities to get the highest scoring combination for one of the 13 categories listed on the score pad.  After the third roll a score or a zero must be placed in one of the 13 categories.  The game ends when all players have filled in the 13 categories.  Scores and bonus points are totaled and the player with the highest total wins.
