Scrabble is a simple game to play, yet provides hours of challenging and educational fun.  Hasbro's Scrabble was originally introduced in 1948.  Created in the Depression era by Alfred Mosher Butts, the game was hand made in a Connecticut garage until 1952.  The game consists of a printed game board, four tile holders and 100 letter tiles. The basic edition costs less than $15.

To play, gather two to four players. Players begin by choosing seven letter tiles.  The player who makes the first move places their word over the center square and receives double word score.   There after, each player takes a turn, adding at least one tile to form a new word. If no word can be formed, the player must forfeit their turn. Placing a word on a colored square can increase the value of the word.  At the end of each turn, the player chooses new tiles to keep a total at seven tiles.    The objective is to earn the most points for each word added to the board.  The eight red squares are the most sought after, tripling the word value.   Pink squares offer double word value and blue squares offer double or triple letter value.

Official rules specify that words can be anything except proper nouns, abbreviations or hyphenated words. Any word that is capitalized cannot be played. Instructions recommend that a dictionary be agreed upon before play begins in the case of a challenge.  Any player can challenge a word before the next turn.  If the word is correct, the challenger then loses his or her turn, if the word is unacceptable the player loses their turn.

Tiles can be added in various configurations as long as all tiles form acceptable words and are not placed diagonally. Players continue to lay down words with the tiles they have chosen until no tiles are left.  Play continues in turn until no more words can be formed. Any remaining tiles are subtracted from the player's score.  Highest score wins. Variations can be made for shorter play or younger players.

Sounds simple...but the strategy is anything but.   Competitive players vie for the elusive red squares-triple word value.  If unable to form a high value word, utilizing the tile will prevent other players from a high score.  While new players fear the high point letters such as Q or Z ,  experienced players consider them gold.  Properly placed, such a letter can yield a huge score.   The National Scrabble Association, devoted to Scrabble enthusiasts, claims over 10,000 members and offers 175 or more tournaments each year. Any player can be rated by participating in tournaments. Ratings over 1600 are considered expert. Their website considers expert play to produce game scores over 400, but recommends the most accurate way to determine a players skill level is by average points earned per turn. Over 35 points per turn is considered expert play.
