Tired of getting whipped by your friends whenever someone breaks out the Scrabble board? Then what you probably need is a little bit of practice. Playing Scrabble online is a great way to get some game time in when your friends are not around, or if you just want to improve your skills behind their backs.
One of the best places to play Scrabble online is the Internet Scrabble Club (isc.ro). This site has a lot to offer for anyone wanting to play, whether you are a newbie or an advanced pro. Hundreds of games are running at all hours of the day or night, and you can choose to play the game in a variety of languages and dictionaries. You can use the matching service to find players who are in the same skill range as you, or you can even play against a handful of computer opponents. Play is achieved through a free piece of software that you download from the site. If you make a donation to the Internet Scrabble Club, then you have access to a web based client that allows you to play in just about any internet browser.
If you’re looking for a more slow paced game of Scrabble, the “Let’s Play Scrabble” is a good site to check out at thepixiepit.co.uk/scrabble. Unlike the Internet Scrabble Club, this version is played via email, and as such, if you want to find an opponent you have to find the email address of someone wanting to play. The site has a message board where you can post your name and that you want to play. Actual entry of words is done via the web site, and the site does not enforce words, it is up to the players to make sure that any words they enter are legitimate. While it has its drawbacks, the site is still fairly popular for more casual players.
If you can find a copy of Atari’s Scrabble Online in your local bargain bin or Ebay, then you might want to pick it up an give it a try. It offers online play, a matching service, and an attractive game board. Best of all it is a self contained piece of software, meaning that you don’t have to play it on a web page. The game enforces words and scoring, and even includes a few mini games for some fun between serious games. While being the “official” version of online Scrabble, there are fewer players of this version than any other.
Finally, if you can live with playing a game that’s a lot like Scrabble, but is not in fact Scrabble, then you can give Literati a try (games.yahoo.com). This game, which resides on the Yahoo! Games mega-site, has game play like Scrabble with a few twists, such as each player starting the game with a “Wild” tile. Literati is immensely popular, with over 10,000 players online at any given time. So while it’s technically not Scrabble, it is still an excellent game for improving your word building skills.
Scrabble is a game that is enjoyed around the world, and every year there are dozens of Scrabble tournaments held in the United States and abroad. Get online and brush up your skills and maybe one day you can be a Scrabble pro. |
