Billiards, as defined by Mariam-Webster is “any of several games played on an oblong table by driving small balls against one another or into pockets with a cue; specifically : a game in which one scores by causing a cue ball to hit in succession two object balls”.  Although there are over two dozen variations of billiards, here I will cover the basic rules for two of  the most common games: 8-ball and 9-ball.

8-Ball

In this game all balls are racked with the triangle with the ball at the apex placed over the footspot with a solid colored ball in one corner and a striped ball in the other corner.  The racking is to be solid with each ball touching the others (sometimes known as ‘tight rack’).  Be sure to remove the triangle carefully so as not to disturb the balls, creating a ‘loose rack’.

In competition play the winner of the lag (or round) has the option to break or allow their competitor to break.  When playing individual games or competitions the breaks are alternated between players.  Once the break has been made, if a ball has been pocketed off of the break, the player’s turn continues.  If no ball has been pocketed, the breaking player’s turn ends.  The table is still open, meaning that no balls have been claimed, even if there are one or more balls pocketed on the break.  The table remains open until a player pockets a called ball.

As soon as one player does not pocket his intended ball their turn ends.  If a player pockets the cue ball during a shot the turn ends.  If a player pockets the 8-ball on any play other than the break the game is over and the win goes to the other player.  The game ends when one player pockets all of their group of balls and pockets the 8-ball.

9 Ball

The concept of 9 Ball is the same as 8 Ball with a few changes to the rules.  In this game only 9 of the balls are used.  They are the low-end numbers running from 1 through 9.  When racking the balls for this game the 1-ball is placed at the apex of the triangle and on the footspot.  Seven of the remaining balls are placed randomly to form a diamond shape in the triangle.  The 9-ball is placed in the middle of the diamond.  The racking in this game is also to be tight.

On the break shot the cue ball must strike the 1-ball and pocket at least one ball or the break must drive at least four balls to the rails.  Failure to do this will result in the player’s turn being over.  The game is then played almost identical to 8 Ball with the exception that the object ball must be the lowest-numbered ball on the table with the 9-ball being the last ball to pocket.

Billiards is a fun game that uses balance, eye-hand coordination, critical calculation and good sportsmanship.  Many hours of practice are necessary to compete in the various championships however there is little practice necessary to have a good game between friends.
