Blackjack is a popular casino game. In Las Vegas, the game is played with two decks of playing cards. In Atlantic City, the dealer uses four decks. In other games, six or eight decks of playing cards can be used. 

The object is simple: rack up cards that total twenty one or as close to it as possible. If you go over twenty one, you go bust and you lose any chips (money) you have bet on that hand. If you tie with the dealer, then that's called a push. A push means that neither of you wins. So, you don't lose your bet. You need to have more points than the dealer does without going bust to win a hand.     

Each playing card has a point value assigned to it. The aces are either one or eleven points. Face cards are ten points, while the rest of the numbered deck are the same point values as their numbers. 

For example, a seven is seven points, a four is four points, and so on. 

The game normally starts by each player in the game of Blackjack making a bet. Then, the dealer gives each player two cards face up. He or she gives themselves two cards, but one is face up and one is face down. 

Then, each player in turn either stands, which means that they don't want any more point cards. Or, they take a hit which means they get another card dealt face up. Again, you need to add up the points in your hand and try to get as close to the total of twenty one as possible. 

If you or any other player is lucky enough to get an ace and a ten or a face card on the first deal, then that is twenty one points. That is an instant Blackjack! You win one and a half times your bet, unless the dealer happens to have a Blackjack too! If he or she does, then it's called a push and the hand is called a tie. 

But, you won't know what the dealer has in their hand until you and the rest of the players are done. 

Then, the dealer takes his or her play and you all find out the results of the hand.    

There are a few certain terms used during the game of Blackjack that you'll need to know:

Insurance: If the dealer has an ace, you'll be allowed to place an additional bet of up to fifty percent of your current bet. If the dealer's second card is a ten and he or she ends up with a two card (also called a natural) Blackjack, then the insurance will get you two to one odds.        

Surrender: Means that you fold your hand and you lose only fifty percent of your bet.   

Split Hand: Means that you split your two cards up and play them individually to try and reach twenty one.

In order to win at the game, you'll need to have a couple winning strategies in mind when you sit down at a blackjack table. First, keep in mind that it's not you against the other players. It's each player against the dealer. While it's true that you want to get your point values as close to twenty one as you can, your main goal is to have more points than the dealer does. Therefore, pay close attention to your cards and his or hers as well.    

Once you reach fifteen, the game gets interesting from there. The chances are iffy that you'll get a six or below if you take another card. Oftentimes, it's better to stand. Or, even surrender is the dealer has a better looking hand than yours.    

However,  Lady Luck can be on your side, and if you stand at fifteen, you could actually win the hand if the dealer busts.
