Just because you have a baby or small child doesn¡¯t mean you have to give up your love of the outdoors.  If you like to hit the road with your bike, you can still do it safely with a child trailer attached to the back of your bike.

While there are standards in place for child trailers (set by the American Society for Testing and Materials), these standards are voluntary and manufacturers do not have to follow them.  But knowing what those standards are can definitely help as you search for the right trailer for you and your child.  The standards involve strength of materials used, warning labels, resistance to varying temperatures and a tip-over test.

The benefits of a child trailer include transporting multiple children, handling larger children than bike seats are able and carrying additional items such as books and food, to amuse your kids during the ride.  Children can eat, play and nap in the trailers, translating into a longer bike ride for you.  Trailers also offer protection from rain, sun and wind. Trailers are typically more stable and allow for better handling as well.

Keep in mind that infants should have sufficient head and neck strength before being transported in a trailer.  The jostling of a bike ride is not good for babies with weak neck muscles.  You¡¯ll want to wait until your baby is strong enough to endure the bumps on the road.  When in doubt, ask your pediatrician.  Of course, when your child is ready to hit the road, you should still use a helmet to protect his or her head.

Things You Should Look For

Two of the main things you should look at are stability and security.  Does the trailer have a low center of gravity?  A lower trailer can provide a more stable riding environment for your child.  You also want your child protected from any dirt or small objects that might be whipped up by the wheels of the bicycle.  Check the harness to make sure that it is durable and secure.  

The hitch is what connects the trailer to your bike and you¡¯ll want to look at this closely. Not all hitches are designed alike.  The axle and frame mounts are the two most popular types.  Many have a center pull draw bar and the ability to mount easily to the bike with a pin. Look for a joint that moves freely in any direction to give you the best movement.  For added safety, you can find trailers with a hitch safety strap.  If for any reason the hitch loosens or comes off the bike, the safety strap helps to keep the trailer tethered to the bike.

Check the width ¨C you may not have the space that some trailers require.  Look at your garage, or the area you plan on storing the trailer when it is not in use.  Measure that area before purchasing a trailer. This will help you avoid buying a trailer that you have no place to store.

If you are on the road a lot, and need to take the trailer with you, a trailer with the ability to fold is in your best interest.  If possible, try to fold and unfold a trailer at the store before you buy.  Not all trailers are created equal!  Some have much more difficult to use folding and opening mechanisms.  Remember, the store is a controlled environment.  Outside you will be dealing with a trailer as well as a child who wants your attention.  You want something that will fold and open with the greatest ease and shortest amount of time.

Your best bet is to go to your local sporting goods store and check out the trailers on hand.  Bring the kids with you.  The best way to decide what will work for you is to inspect it closely, place the kids inside and to practice mounting the trailer to a bike in the store.
