What is a home phone line network?

A home phone line network (also known as HomePNA or HPNA) is an affordable and relatively simple way to connect all the computers in your home to one Internet connection.  You can also use your home phone line network to share files and play computer games head-to-head.  Your home network will also enable you to share devices such as printers, scanners, and fax machines.

What advantages are there to a home phone network?

A HomePNA is also cheaper and less complex than other options, such as Ethernet.  It adds a world of convenience and potential to your family¡¯s personal computers, allowing each individual¡¯s machine to access all the resources available to the house¡¯s other PCs.  This means no more sibling rivalry over who gets to use the computer with online access, and no more saving a document to disk and then walking it over to the only computer that is hooked up to a printer.  

Is it difficult to set up a home phone line network?

No, anyone who is even slightly familiar with hooking up electronic equipment can do it with ease.  

What equipment will I need?

You will require a network adapter for each computer that will be on the network.  Depending on your situation, you can choose from either internal or external network adapters, or even use a combination of both within the same network.  If you are working with an operating system that is running Windows 98 or later, or if you have a laptop, it is generally recommended that you select an external adapter that will connect through the computer¡¯s USB port.  For those with an older operating system like Windows 95, you will need to go with an internal PCI card adapter.  If you¡¯re comfortable with opening up your PC, go for it.  The PCI card adapter can be installed on the PCI bus.  However, if you are unfamiliar with your computer¡¯s innards, it should not cost much to have a service/repair person do it for you.

How will the network work?

Most HomePNA networks are set up in a similar fashion.  Once you have installed network adapters on each PC that will be included in the network, the next step is to use the telephone wall jack to connect each computer to your home¡¯s phone wiring.  It¡¯s as simple as that.  The network drivers that already come with your operating system will allow the computers to access the network.  To share devices such as printers, make sure the ¡°Share¡± option is selected under the printer¡¯s ¡°Properties¡± tab.

Will I need any software?

If you want to use your HomePNA to share Internet access, you¡¯ll need to designate one computer (the ¡°gateway¡±) that will share access with the others on the network.  The computer serving as the gateway must always be switched ¡°on¡± in order for the other computers to get online.  Many adapter cards come with this type of software already included; if not, you can purchase the appropriate software for your operating system.
