To many of us, our pets are like our children. They are an integral part of the family, so it is no wonder that we want to give our furry friends a comfortable and luxurious lifestyle. Creating a luxury space for your pet is easy and fun. Take a look at five ways to give your doggies and kitties the royal treatment:
1. Water is the beverage of choice amongst our four-legged friends, so pamper your pet with fresh running water. Visit your local pet supplies store, or shop online. Many companies are now making water units that have fresh flowing water that circulates and automatically refills. Animals find the sound of running water to be alluring. Four paws up on these innovative water bowls!
2. Our animals need a soft spot to rest after their busy play schedules! Buy a soft pet bed, and put it in a spot that your pet likes to sleep. Depending on your pet's needs, you might opt for an orthopedic bed, which can provide soothing relief especially for older dogs. If your dog or cat is prone to fleas, or if you are putting the bed on a hard floor, then you should try an elevated pet bed... they look sort of like hammocks, only the middle is slightly more taut, and (of course), they are much lower to the ground. These beds can also alleviate muscle pain from various ailments such as arthritis. You can make them even more special by embroidering your pet's name on the bed. For cats, you can affix some mice to the bed -- just stitch the tails on, and you will be providing hours of entertainment for your feline friend! For dogs, toss in a rope toy -- it will be a pleasant surprise for your pooch!
3. Litter boxes shouldn't be so boring! You can spruce up your kitty's "powder room" by turning an ugly litter box into an attractive little cottage. Get some wood, a hammer, and nails, and build a structure of four walls (cut out the "door" where the opening is on the litter box), and a roof -- it is basically like a small doghouse. Then, paint an attractive exterior -- maybe a fish pattern? Add your cat's name above the door, and put a door mat in front (just cut a regular doormat down to the desired size).
4. Your pet's luxury space should be near a window... both dogs and cats love to look out the window, and see what the birds and squirrels and neighborhood animals are up to! If the window is low enough to the ground for your bed to easily see out of it, then just make sure there is nothing blocking their view (like a bookshelf). Also, just hang some simple curtains, so that they can easily walk behind them. If you have horizontal blinds, your pet will make a real mess of them because they are going to try to jump through the slats, or stick their head through them to get a better view. If you have a small dog or a cat, and your window is a little higher up, but easily within a jump's reach, then you should put cushion on the window ledge for them to sit on. If there isn't a ledge, you can purchase window seats to attach for pets, or, for cats, you could put a cat tower or cat tree in front of the window so they can sit on it and look out.
5. Have your pet¡¯s favorite toys in their luxury space. Cat nip toys, scratching posts, rope toys, squeaky toys... whatever your pet's preference! Do not hang toys from the ceiling -- it seems like it would be fun, but it is a safety hazard -- they could get caught up in the hanging strings. Remember, your pet¡¯s favorite way to play is with you! Create a space for your pet in an area of the home that you and the family spend a lot of time in, like the living room, so that your pet can spend as much quality luxury time with you as possible! |
